Ahh, Sonic Mania. The game that revived the style of the Genesis/MegaDrive games. Not only there were selected re-imagined courses from Sonic 1, 2, CD, and 3&K, but there were some original courses added to the mix. Over the years since it's release, Sonic Mania has kept its charm and replay value to Sonic fans almost everywhere. 

But... have you ever wondered what the game used to look like, around a year or so before it officially launched worldwide for consoles, and then two weeks later, PC? Well, this mod has just the response for that question. I introduce you to...

Sonic Mania: Project Discovery!

What is Sonic Mania: Project Discovery? This mod aims to revert most (if not all) of the changes that the Sonic Mania team had made since the beginning of development to the final retail release. There were a lot of differences. Sonic Mania was originally called Sonic the Hedgehog: Discovery, according to the files.

From the announcement trailer, the playable demos at E3 2016 and 2017, to the retail release, there was a numerous amount of content that ended up unused, which sit in the game files. Level layouts such as Green Hill, Studiopolis and Mirage Saloon were drastically different in comparison to how they then appeared in retail releases. There were also quite some internal names for some of the content! 

This mod is a work in progress, and some stuff that you see in this mod is subject to change at random.

This mod also works with Encore Mode. Due to that, a bunch more level design and object tweaks have been made to accomodate for it. 

Mighty and Ray are not allowed to use the Love Tester at Studiopolis Act 2 because the universe will stop working if they touch it.

Angel Island is totally different too, and that's pretty much the only original part of the mod I wanted to feature myself, albeit at a work in progress state.
