Optimization Testing in Source Engine

A Tutorial for Source Engine

A technical paper tackling the issue of methodically testing the frame rate and optimization system in the Source engine.

Optimization Testing in Source Engine
------------------
Properly testing your optimization setup
by Will2k
Every process needs a procedure to make it work but it also requires testing and proper quality control to make sure it meets the target set. Optimization in Source engine follows this path since it is a substantial process in level design; once your optimization system is in place, you need to make sure it fulfills its task of increasing and keeping your frame rate as high as possible. If you have read my previous comprehensive paper about Source engine optimization titled Man vs. Engine that was released over a year ago, then you already know the optimization procedure and sequential methodology to win your optimization battles against Source engine. If you have not read the paper yet, please do so before continuing further with this paper that is somehow the logical sequel to the previous one. The previous paper can be found [here](http://source.gamebanana.com/tuts/11178 "") What’s left to be done is measure and gauge the efficiency of your optimization setup and perform necessary amendments when needed. This paper will shed some light on how to properly test your optimization system in a methodical way that I personally use when testing my own maps before release or when testing friends/other persons’ maps in order to advise them on the ideal optimization setup. The paper is in PDF format (28 pages, 5.9 MB) and can be downloaded from the below link on Mediafire: [Optimization Testing in Source Engine](http://www.mediafire.com/download/b2t78gb1poapcgg/Optimization+Testing+in+Source+Engine.pdf "") An alternate link hosted in-house on Gamebanana can be found below: [Optimization Testing in Source Engine](http://files.gamebanana.com/bitpit/optimization_testing_in_source_engi.pdf "")

I've found some spare time to read your new paper, Will. I must say that it's really helpful and clear. These methods should be used by every level designer in their own maps as it improves the overall quality and playability of the map. I liked chapter "III.1 - Localized fps" most, as it's a good method on how to see the improvements achieved; not everyone uses this method, unfortunately. It's a shame that STILL no one commented on this. Am I the only one interested on how to properly optimize a map in the Source engine? :/ Anyway, I've had a really good read (once again), Will. Great work on this! Thank you. :) 10/10
