BETA 1.1 4y
  • - Fixed "floating trees" bug.
I fixed a bug that caused models to float in the air or be placed outside the world.
BETA 1.0 Released! 4y Alpha 2.1: Now with file browser 4y Improved user interface 4y alpha 2.0 4y

A tool to place prop_statics on surfaces.

**Tree Planter** This is a tool I made to create huge forests in Source maps (It should work with any source game!). Don't worry about placing each tree by hand anymore, tree planter will do the job for you! **Functionality:** You can select tree models from a list of standard HL2/EP2 models as well as your own custom models, from your mod directory. When you're done, you select your map file and the Tree planter scans the file for brushes with a specified material on it. It then will place the selected models in random distance and random orientation onto the material-surface. **BETA 1.1** You can choose from a list of HL2/EP2 models now (no need to extract them! **Features:** - You can specify the density at which the trees are planted. - You can add custom models. - Works basically with any model, no need to be trees. - You can raise the chance of a certain tree to be placed, by adding it to the list multiple times. - You can create huge forests with a lot of variation in no time! **BETA 1.1:** - Final user interface design - The user is allowed to use custom models. - The user can choose models from a list of standard HL2/EP2 tree models. - Tested with a whole lot of huge/complex maps without crashing! - Fixed "floating trees"-bug. **STILL TODO:** - File browser shall browse .vpk archives. - For some mysterious reason the tree does not update when pressing "reload". If you added filed to the filesystem just restart the program. - Even more testing... **Requires Java runtime (JRE)!** - Get the latest version @[Oracle.com](http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre7-downloads-1880261.html "Oracle") Although I tested it a lot, I don't take responsibility for any damage to your map file!

    > **Posted by Jesse V92** > > > > It's making floating trees now, but it works at least. Well shit. This problem occurs if your brush is right at the origin of the coordinate system (for whatever reason). If you manage to select the affected models, just drag & drop them to the right position in the Top view. Like in this picture: text (picture) They are not actually floating, they just have the wrong y-value... I hope I can fix this soon...

As I said, please complete the program when you get time because it would be the most valuable tool in my toolbox for mapping since I do a lot of open-world-y map types and it would potentially mean the end of messing about with detail sprites and manually placing each bush.

Thanks for your feedback, I have to learn for an exam, so I don't really have the time to work on this project right now... As soon as I find the time, I will make an update trying to fix all the bugs already mentioned. The user interface is shitty, I have to admit. But I didn't see a reason to use it more than once for a map (in case it worked...). But the idea of having a config file that remembers all the selected paths/models is a great thing. In my recent updates I mainly focused on making it work stable because there are so many things that can cause a crash (while loading the map file mostly). As I said before, to make sure it will work try using an empty map with just the displacements/faces textured that you want your models on. If you have a whole block textured with "grass"-material it will try to plant trees on the vertical faces as well, which leads to crashes. I'm looking forward to work on this again :)

There's a lot of problems with this program, and here's a list of them: - The list of added models doesn't save, which is very time consuming to go through and re-add ALL of them each time you start the program - The add a custom model button doesn't save where you were, so you end up having to navigate the whole file tree each time you want to add a model - The list of added models that you want to generate doesn't save upon closing the program, which is also a time sink - There's no way to remove added models from the model drop down list, which is bad because someone is going to add a bunch of models and not know how to get rid of them - The program doesn't work at all, even with the latest Java JRE installed Basically, make the program generate a config file of some kind that saves everything, and make the config file save in plain text so people can copy/paste model paths to and from the config for quick access and editing of the jump lists. Also, make the program, y'know, actually work, because I really need a program like this (I do a lot of large outdoor maps), and I was extremely disappointed to find out it didn't work. Please continue working on this program, as it would be a great toolbox asset for Source mappers once you fix these bugs.

    > **Posted by FlyingPenguin** > > Very useful tool , only if it would have worked for me XC > I selected the model , the material type and the vmf but when I click save map I dont know what should happen next . Can you help me ? I currently don't have the time to do some heavy testing. But here are some known bugs: - If you have vertical faces with the selected texture on it, it will make the program crash (due to differences in the z coordinate or something). - Some .vbsp settings will cause crashes too. - The parsing is unstable (crashes when parsing huge maps for whatever reason) What I recommend you is to use this tool in an early state of your map (only brushes and displacements) to make sure it works. I will add an error message or something like that soon, so at least you know what fucked up...

Please don't decompile the code!! It is pretty ugly anyway. If you want to know how I made things, you can ask me :)
