Shader Practice - A Work In Progress for Counter-Strike: Source.

Progress Report

Completed

Golden thingy

Does it look golden to you guys? What do you think?
The texture was a bit of a brown-ish yellow of some sort.

Model - Toasty Fresh
Textures - Millenia

Kinda looks ehh atm.
I knowwww, Soldier11's shaders are far more better than mine.

Update:

Update 2:

Notes:
Grip and Bullet will have their own VMT setup so, just don't mind it for now...

I know it doesn't reflect the environment well, so far increasing the $envmaptint kinda fucks it up.

oh yes. definitely looks better now.

@Thanez, gives it a nicer reflection. could have been how the envmap looked in dust2 in soldier11's video, i'm not sure

Of course he could do something stylish, but when it comes to making gold, he should stick to making gold, and gold doesn't reflect blue unless the lightsource is blue.
Is this what you're talking about? http://gamebanana.com/wips/44642
From watching the video there, I think soldier11 used a less saturated color for his envmaptint, and that CS:GO has more strongly lit or saturated envmaps. He could also have used $envmapcontrast or $envmapsaturation

I should say there's no WRONG way to do something. You have an effect to achieve, and as long as you do that, it doesn't matter how you did it.

Probably, I tested it out on a well lit area with a skybox like dust2, it reflects blue but not really like that of soldier11's.

Increasing the blue tint kinda messes up the overall look for me.

    Here ya go: http://skins.thanez.net/source_envmap_calculator.xlsx

Seeing that dark grip tells me $color2 worked? Which source version is this?

Yes it did thanks! and also for that tool. Anw I kind of increased the value a bit (it looked weird in well lit areas.)

I am only sometimes good at giving advice. try using "$color2" "[0.1 0.1 0.1]" to alter the diffuse brightness. [ 1 1 1 ] is default, less is darker, more is brighter. Dunno if it works with all versions of source tho. Try messing with it before you alter mill's textures.

Also, I have this envmap calculation sheet that I made to easify the envmap coloring process. Basically you input an RGB that you got from a picture you like, play with strength modifier, and it spits out the VMT line you need. I have troubles uploading it to my host thing, so you'll have to click https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BztwPyJQwuS1bGJPX0RUTzFEZG8 and request access to it for now...

Please what blue tint are they talking about? I've never seen gold reflect blue. This angers and confuses me :P

So here thanks for the pointers, I really think i'm close. (Disregard the grip, I'm going to separate the materials for it and also for the bullet.)

    kinda nice

i would increase the envmap strength just a bit and give it a bluish tint like soldier11 has though.

the tweaks you've made to the color are even worse than before, you don't want it to look like butter/mayo. needs more saturation or the color needs to be shifted towards the red just a bit. are you using $phongalbedotint by any chance?

seems like you've left out the wood completely. doesn't seem to be reflecting anything as well. for worn uncoated wood this would be kinda true, but i doubt that a golden desert eagle would have grips made out of uncoated bare wood

Right got it, the wood btw has no shaders yet, I separated the grip bcs I'd do a different shader for it.
