Guide: Recruiting Strider - A Tutorial for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat.

A detailed, instructional guide to hiring Strider onto your expedition team.

Recruiting Strider Disclaimer: Spoilers ahead. Please assess when finished! During the course of Call of Pripyat, the player may run into a Monolith squad - one that is very confused, lost, dazed, and friendly. They will explain to the player that they are no longer under the psychological brainwashing of the Monolith, and will request help in gaining safe passage back into the life of a Stalker. This mission is not altogether difficult by itself, but gaining enough trust of either Duty or Freedom is, for this quest. Attempting to tell a faction leader that they can be trusted won't help you much if that faction leader doesn't trust you. In addition to allowing you to recruit Strider (the Monolith squad leader) to assist you in the Pripyat Underground, you will need to complete this quest in its entirety. Fortunately, this quest has an extreme number of benefits and very few drawbacks to complete - you can finish it fairly early in the game, and the rewards you will receive from the faction you support are immense. The Beginning Soon after the game begins and you get aboard the Skadovsk, Beard will ask you to help a group of Stalkers interrupt an arms deal between Mercenary troops and Bandits. Accept the offer. When you arrive, you will find a Mercenary commander (Morgan) discussing that he has stolen a Duty weapons cache and is willing to sell the weapons to the Bandits. Deal with the situation however you deem necessary - the key here is to steal Morgan's PDA. Dispatch him and pull the PDA off his corpse. Note: Although not necessary, it is advisable that you take this opportunity to collect a more powerful weapon. You may need the firepower for a later mission in this guide. You will have the option to sell the PDA to Owl, on the Skadovsk. Do not do so. The PDA is worth much more than he will pay you. Hang onto it instead. Take however long you need to prepare for the next bit - you don't need to hurry if you don't want to. Go to Pilot and travel to Yanov when you are ready. Taking Part in the Faction War You are now presented with a choice - you may present Morgan's PDA to either the Duty or Freedom commanders in Yanov. Regardless of your choice, you will still be able to recruit Strider for the Pripyat mission. The other rewards for either choice are listed below:
Duty ∙ Discount from Duty-sympathizing Yanov technician ("Nitro", Undocumented) ∙ Ability to purchase PSZ-9d Duty Suit, Groza from Hawaiian ∙ PSZ-9d Duty Suit ∙ Entire Duty Warehouse Cache (Including PSZ-9d Duty Suit, Groza)
Freedom ∙ Discount from Freedom-sympathizing Yanov Trader ("Hawaiian", Undocumented) ∙ Ability to purchase Wind of Freedom Suit, SVD, from Hawaiian ∙ Wind of Freedom Suit ∙ Entire Duty Warehouse Cache (Including PSZ-9d Duty Suit, Groza)
For the sake of this guide, I will choose Freedom - the rewards are slightly better, in my opinion, as it allows you to receive both suits. Once you have handed off the PDA, you will need to go to the Duty cache and kill the side that you didn't give the PDA to - if you gave it to Freedom, kill Duty; if you gave it to Duty, kill Freedom. The faction you sided with will now trust you and be friendly to you, and you will receive membership. Recruiting the Squad You must now go meet the Monolith Squad. They can be found just North of the Container Warehouse, to the most South-Western end of Yanov (See the map screenshot to the left.) Once there, speak with Strider. He will inform you of the squad's situation. Return to your faction leader, and inform him of the squad. With some convincing, he will send a couple of recruiters to them with you. The recruiters will describe their faction, and the Monolith will accept. Once the squad returns to Yanov Station with you and the recruiters, they will become regular members of their faction, Friendly, and will wander the Zone with their comrades. Strider will not, however. As of now, your mission is complete, and you may continue playing the game until the time comes for your expedition. Strider When the time comes to recruit people for your mission to Pripyat, you can go to Strider and ask him to come with you. He will very eagerly agree, wishing to travel to Pripyat in an effort to free other Monolith members from their brainwashing.
Strider's Expedition Gear, Role ∙ Modified SVU Sniper Rifle ∙ Monolith Suit, SEVA Helmet ∙ Super effective against Stalkers. ∙ Weak against Mutants.
Strider is a particularly diffulct squadmate to hire, but he's in interesting character, and one that is easily overlooked or missed. I hope you enjoy his assistance in your playthrough! Best of luck. Please assess!
