[title]Packing your Custom Skin/Model into a VPK[/title]
Q: Why pack your skin/model/etc.. into a VPK?
A: Easy packaging, all the player has to do is drop it in the addons folder and select the addons in extras. And the skin/model replacement will appear in-game.
Please note this tutorial assumes you've completed your model/skin replacement and ready to release it!
Step 1: Creating the folder
Create a folder and name it to match your release (Ex/ If I was releasing a ellis skin I'd probably call it ellisreskin.) in your Left 4 Dead 2's 'Addons' folder (Found in Steam/steamapps/common/left 4 dead 2/left 4 dead 2/)
Now move your custom model, material, sound, etc. in the folder. Keep the folder structure. (Ex/ ellisreskin/materials/models/survivors/mechanic)
Step 2: Making the addoninfo.txt
Create a new text file called 'addoninfo' and open it. Copy the following in the file. Configure it to your need.
// The addoninfo.txt file is a metadata file that is required by all Left 4 Dead Add-ons.
addontitle "Skin Test" // Add-on title that shows up in Add-ons list. ~20 chars max
addonversion 1 // Add-on version.
addontagline "Test to see if custom skins work." // Add-on tagline or wrap-up- a short description. ~100 chars max
addonauthor "JakeB" // Name/alias of the author
addonauthorSteamID "http://steamcommunity.com/id/frostbite" // Steam Profile URL of author or group
addonContent_Campaign 0 //This addon provides muliple connected maps with a finale
addonURL0 "l" //An html home page for the add-on that includes a download link.
// short description that appears in the Add-on list screen...
addonDescription "Test to see if custom skins work."
// Authors can add localized descriptions here. (Not yet supported)
addonContent_prop 0 //This Add-on provides new props,
addonContent_Prefab 0 //Provides new prefabs
addonContent_BackgroundMovie 0 //Provides a replacement for the background movie.
addonContent_Survivor 0 //Provides a new survivor model. 0=false, 1=true, String in quotes if replaces specific single character, i.e. "Francis"
addonContent_BossInfected 0 //Provides a new boss infected model. Break these out?
addonContent_CommonInfected 0 //Provides a new common infected model
addonContent_WeaponModel 0 //Provides a new appearance to existing weapons, but does not change their function
addonContent_weapon 0 //provides new weapons or new zombie killing functionality, i.e. guns, explosives, booby traps, hot tar,
addonContent_Skin 1 //0 if no new skin textures for existing models. 1 if multiple skin pack. String in quotes if specific single skin
addonContent_Spray 0 //Provides new sprays.
addonContent_Map 0 //Add-on provides a standalone map
This part shouldn't require much explaining since all the comments pretty much explain the options. If you require additional assistance please write in the comments and I'll try to answer you ASAP.
Step 3: Packing it all up into a VPK.
Now that you've finished the addoninfo.txt you can finally pack it up into a easily distributable VPK file.
Go to Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\bin and create a shortcut of 'vpk.exe' (for convenience.) and throw it on your desktop. Once that's done drag your folder from 'addons' onto the shortcut.
It will create a VPK file of your addon which you can now zip up and upload it for the masses. (You can also remove your folder as it's useless, although you'll need it if you're going to make additional modifications to your VPK file.)
I recently made a map that finally got NAV to work. It's a survival map, but I understand I can't just upload the bsp map files to the site and work for multiplayer. And so far as I understand it, it'll have to be a VPK format. And so here I am, I followed your instruction, and put it into my addon folder. But when I load my game up, it saids or something like that. And I DID put my name and stuff on it, so what's the deal?
One thing i DISAGREE with:
pak01.dir DOES NEED EDITING IF YOU WANT CUSTOM STUFF IN ANYTHING BUT SINGLE PLAYER OR CAMPAIN!
so besides thet a good tut if ya ask me, now good thing i got mahself some colt 1911s in l4d2 with decent anims, no more darn floating pistols with no walk anims

Oh wow, this is wayy too complicated.

Well, you forgot one thing. It's necessary to install L4D2 Authoring Tools to have vpk.exe in bin directory.
"Question where does the addoninfo.txt go? If I get more then one skin in there from me it gets screwed up."
In root directory from campaign/model.
