Glowing Textures (in the dark) - A Tutorial for Half-Life 2

Glowing in the dark textures

DescriptionEver wondered why and how parts of textures glow in the dark? Here I will show you a simple way creating parts of textures (or the whole texture) glow in the dark.
Notes- It doesn't work with sprays, the shader doesn't support it.
- If you can't see the images in the tutorial itself, try to view them from the screenshots provided with the tutorial.
Requirements - Photoshop
- VTF Edit
The TutorialStep 1: Open up the texture in Photoshop. Choose your preferable selection tool, and select the areas you want them to glow.

Step 2: Switch to your "Channels" tab (while still having the selection on) and make sure there are exactly four channels: "RGB" "Red" "Green" "Blue" If there are any other channels, delete them. Now, while having your selection on, click on the "Create new channel" button:

Then go to "Edit > Fill" (SHIFT + F5) and click ok to fill the selected area with white:

Then it should look like this (depending on your area selections of course):
(CTRL + D to Deselect)

And now save the image as a Targa (TGA) with 32 bits.
Step 3: Next, head over to your VTF Edit, and import the image you have just saved. (If you don't know how to import images with VTF, please read more VTF tutorials in the tutorial section) To make sure you wanted the right glowing spots, click "View > Mask".

Step 4: Open the VMT of the texture, and add the following line:
"$Selfillum" "1"

When I looked at the .VMT for the spy's disguise kit (v_cigarette_case.vmt) it already had the line for "$Selfillum" "1". So I left it as is and now the screen on the case (which was the selection I chose) doesn't light up. Any suggestions?

Check the Alpha Channel and make sure you fill it properly.

I believe it has something to do with the recent Steampipe update, which changed a bit the order of where you put modded files. I haven't modded a source game in years so sadly I couldn't edit the tutorial to be compatible with the current version. However I highly doubt valve would patch out the fullbright effect.

Hi there, First of all, thanks for this tutorial, it is easy to read and understand. Though it doesn't seem to work when I try to use it with parts of the playermodels in CS:S. I want some glowing lights on my playerskins, like a display of an electric device is glowing. But sadly it is not working properly. So is it a mistake on my end or more like VALVe patched that feature out of CS:S to prevent kids from making fully glowing playermodels since it was an unfair advantage?
