A guide to the different units

This guide is a general over view of all the troops you will be able to command in the great RTS game, Stronghold Crusader. It will list the advantages , weaknesses and cost of each unit, as well as general strategies for employing such a unit. Enjoy. List of units covered in this guide :
Archer Spearman Maceman Crossbowman Pikemen Swordsmen Knights Monks Engineers Laddermen Tunnelers Arab Bow Slave Slinger Assassin Horse Archer Arab Swordsman Fire Thrower Ballista Ram Fire Ballista Mangonel Catapult Trebuchet Siege tower
These units are carried over from the original
Archer Quick and lightly armoured, but with a good attacking range, Archers will probably be the first troops you will produce. En Masse these guys can easily reduce an attacking army to nothing from within the safety of your own castle walls. Deploy your archers on turrets and gate houses, out of reach of the enemy, as they have very few hit points. Cost: 12 gold, 1 bow .
Spearman The weakest melee unit in your army, the spearmen's only real use comes from their ability to dig moats (as well as fill in the moats of your enemies) their fast speed, and the fact that they are the only unit capable of pushing down enemy ladders scaling your castle walls. Keep a few of these near your lord for that very purpose, other than that their lack of armour and attacking power renders these troops as mere cannon fodder, even in a mass attack. Cost: 8 gold, 1 spear.
Maceman The Macemen are more heavily armed and armoured than the spearmen and still move quickly around the field of battle, making them good shock-tactic troops against siege engines and the like. These guys make short work of archers and spearmen, although their armour wont long stand up against the attacks of a crossbowmen. Also useful is their ability to fill in moats. Cost: 20 gold, 1 leather armour & 1 mace.
Crossbowman Crossbowmen should be numerous in number on your turrets, towers and castle walls. A lot more expensive to produce than archers, they are better armoured and their attacks can easily send heavily armoured troops to their graves. Vital to defence, make sure to take down these guys first if you see them on an enemy tower. Too stuck up to fill in or dig moats, though. Cost: 20 gold, 1 leather armour & 1 crossbow
Pikemen Pikemen (technically Halberd men) are a very, very good unit to produce. Although expensive to produce, like all higher units, they have the best defence in the game, move fast for such a heavily armoured unit, fill in and dig moats, as well as pack quite a punch when the time calls for it. Make these units in large quantities and watch your opponent struggle to fight back. Cost: 20 gold, 1 Iron plate & 1 Polearm.
Swordsmen These guys are dangerous. Heavily armoured, and with the best attack in the game, they take a hail of abuse before they fall in battle. Their main weakness is how very slow they are, but once they reach their target their prey will have little chance of escaping alive. It is a good idea to keep some knights surrounding your lord, for a last ditch defence tactic if your castle is taken by surprise and attacked. Cost: 40 gold, 1 Iron plate & 1 Sword.
Knights Think of very fast swordsmen, and there you have your knights. Except these ones neigh and literally smell like shi*. The best shock troops in the game, the sight of these guys sallying forth from your castle towards the enemy will make them think twice about attacking. Use them to knock out enemy catapults attacking your castle, or keep them near your own siege units as a counter attack measure. The most expensive unit to produce in the game, but damn worth it. These guys can't dismount from their steeds. Cost: 40 gold, 1 Iron plate, 1 Sword & 1 Horse.
Monks You can acquire these guys by paying 10gold at your cathedral. They move slowly, but have a decent enough melee attack for their price. Good for castle defence if most of your troops are down, as they don't require any material to be produce, bar the cathedral and 10 gold purchasing fee. Don't use these guys in an attack, for they haven't got much in the way of hit points, and they'll die before they even reach an enemy wall. Cost: 10 gold.
Engineers This unit is the most versatile in the game, they can dig and fill in moats, use boiling oil, pouring it onto the heads of your enemies and they're best use, manning siege equipment. Having these guys on siege equipment mounted onto your castle towers will be an effective defence, turning the tide of the battle. They can man catapults, which will pulverise enemy walls, man siege towers, providing a climbing platform from which your troops to scale the enemy walls, man fire Ballistas to set fire to enemy farmsteads as well as other uses. A bread and butter unit to your army, if there ever was one. You need to build a engineers guild in order to hire these guys services. Cost: 30 gold.
Laddermen Very weak, but also very fast, use these in large groups and swarm them at the enemy walls, they carry large ladders for your attack force, which will allow them to climb up and over the enemy walls. Cheap to produce but don't stand a chance against a well defended base. No melee attack. No armour. Buy these guys from the engineers guild. Cost: 3 gold.
Tunnelers These Welshies, produced from a tunnelling guild, are useful in a state of siege warfare against an opponent. They can start digging far from the enemy castle, burying themselves in a tunnel under the dirt, and head for the nearest enemy tower or wall. When they reach said wall, it will take heavy damage, extremely useful for ridding yourself of pesky siege engines atop of towers. Can't attack a tower or wall if a moat is in place around the castle. Cost: 30 gold.
These units you may purchase from a mercenary camp. 'Arab' units.
Arab Bow A useful ranged unit, has the same speed, range and rate of fire as the normal archer unit, but these guys have a slightly stronger ranged attack. Make sure to stock up on this unit for defending strategic choke points around your base. Cost: 75 gold.
Slave Slaves are pyromaniacs. These torch-bearers are as weak as your granny. Useless in melee and possessing no armour, even spearmen could slaughter a group of slaves. But they do have a use. If you can get even 1 of these guys inside an enemy base, he will set fire to abso-fooking-lutely everything he can before he succumbs to the flames himself, so it is a good idea to wait a few seconds after telling him to attack a structure, before moving him away again as the flame catches. The only Arab unit that can dig and fill in moats, so stock up on these weaklings at the start of a round to get your base covered by water. Cost : 5 gold.
Slinger Rubbish, they have a low defence and low attacking power. Only useful as a defensive unit in a pinch. Don't waste your money buying them unless you really have to, and even then only use them next to structures of importance as a last ditch measure. Cost: 12 gold.
Assasin Assassins are pretty unique. They use a grappling hook to climb up the enemy's walls, enter their tower, and kill. Invisible to the enemy until they're up close, they have a fair defence and attack so make for good shock troops. They can even open up enemy gatehouses for your troops if they manage to climb atop one. Useful, if expensive . Cost: 60 gold.
Horse Archer No prizes for guessing what they do, they are tied fastest unit in the game, and are good for annoying and harassing the enemy as they can keep out of range of an opposing force as long as you keep manoeuvring them. Use these guys for patrols and defensive measures, as they're not too hot on the offensive side, and if cornered, will be cut down pretty quickly. Like the knights, they cannot dismount. Cost: 60 Gold.
Fire Thrower Think of the imps from doom, you have them in a pixely-arab form right here. No, they dont make weird gurgling sounds and bite, Yes, they do throw fire at the enemy. Great for leveling towns as they can set any structure ablaze in seconds. Dont rely on these guys for base defense though, as they will continue attacking any intruder into your castle, burning your own castle in the process. BFG, anyone? Cost: 100 gold.
Arab Swordsman Slightly weaker than the swordsman, these guys can move a fair bit faster, a large force of these guys spells trouble for your enemies. Very expensive, though, but a nice match for your swordsmen as they are both strong, perhaps mix them in joint squads so they can work together and negate each others disadvantages. Cost: 80 gold.
Ballista This siege weapon fits onto the 2 largest towers available to you, it acts as a giant arrow launching anti personal device. It has a HUGE range and deals amazing damage, but can only target one unit at a time. Good for destroying enemy siege weapons. Can take a fair amount of damage too, but you still might want to send a force out to help defend a Ballista under attack, as it is at risk from ranged units and Trebuchets, which it cannot reach even with such a large range of 83 tiles. Requires: 2 engineers (60 gold) + 50 gold.
Fire Ballista A Ballista in a more compact form, a siege weapon produced by engineers, it moves along the ground unlike the original Ballista, and can be used to set fire to enemy structures. Just as good defending as attacking, with a strong arrow attack and a fair rate of fire, able to take out a swordsmen in seconds. You might want to take a group of knights to keep watch on these babies. Cost: 150 gold + 2 engineers (60 gold).
Mangonel This is the only other siege unit you can place on towers. Spits out rocks like no-ones business. Good for attacking large groups of enemies, as the rocks are one hit killers, but this is an in-accurate weapon and its always good to use more than one Mangonel on a large group of enemies. Very useful atop a tower placed close to an enemy base, as they can demolish walls. Be careful not to aim these anywhere near your own troops. Fair range. Requires: 2 engineers (60 gold) + 50 gold.
Catapult A mobile siege weapon, can be used to obliterate the enemies defences, as it is VERY accurate. This unit can even fire a limited number of dead, diseased cows at a gathering of enemy troops, Monty Python stylee , and spreads a cloud of disease which can be very damaging. Requires: 2 engineers (60 gold) + 150 gold.
Trebuchet Yum. This siege weapon causes a high amount of damage, a group of these really can destroy a castle in seconds. Slower to fire than the catapult and less accurate, it has a silly range and can attack an opposing castle from a great distance. Make sure you make these if you want to stir fear into an enemy camp. Excellent for removing enemy siege weapons from atop of their towers, and amazing at destroying gate houses. Requires: 3 engineers (90 gold) + 150 gold.
Siege Tower This beauty is huge, it has a high amount of hit points and moves at a fair speed towards enemy walls, where once in place, can provide a platform for your soldiers to enter the enemy towers. Can take out a gatehouse for your own troops to just walk through into the enemy castle. Take care of these units and they will give you ample rewards in return. Requires: 4 engineers (120 gold) + 150 gold.
Ram Baa. This piece of siege equipment can use its strong attack to destroy the enemy gatehouse, and has a good amount of hit points, but does move slowly, therefore an easy target for enemy shock troops and Ballistas. Use these on enemy weak points for quick access, I.E one layered walls. Requires: 4 Engineers (120 gold) + 150 gold.
That pretty much sums it up, hope it helped. SdX

Not kissing your ass, but this tutorial is amazing, seriously, sums up every unit very well and also with a nice jokey feel to it, so it's not all serious.

Great job on the HTML aswell, looks very professionally done.

Really can't think of any criticisms so I'll leave it at that, we need some building description and tactic tutorials next, make this game section the shit eh?
