Your tutorial to become the mastah of eye manipulations in PS!
Welcome to the tutorial, hope you are ready for some beautiful eyes!
Eye manipulation is an art in itself, its a very serious and in-depth art, I learnt it on deviantart and now, its pretty much my specialty. I am going to need your utmost attention! I am using Adobe PhotoShop CS2 for this tutorial, and hopefully you guys will follow well. Now, fire up your PS and get ready to do it with meh. Please note that this tutorial is written with the absolute n00b in mind so please bear with me. Here we go!
Here is the HQ stock image that we are going to manip today, save it onto your drive and open it in your PS. If you want to use your own thats fine too!
You should have your Tools and the Layers window floating around, if not then press F7 to pop up the Layers box, as you open the image, on the Layers box you will see a layer called Backgroundwith a black padlock on its right; double left-click on it and click OK. The name should change to Layer 0, okay, let us start off by duping the original layer, press Ctrl+J (or from the menu click Layer> Duplicate Layer), a duplicate is created with its name as Layer 0 copy and is set "active" automatically.
Select the Dodge tool from you Tools, right-click on your canvas, set the brush-size to 1100px and the Hardness to 0%, from the top-left settings panel, set the range to Shadows and Exposure around 40% preferably 39% for this image, bring the brush towards the center of the eye, the iris(black part in the middle), using a circular motion hold down the left-click button for about 10-15 seconds, stay in the middle of the eye! Your image should look like this:
Select the Eraser from your Tools, set the Opacity and Flow to 100% and right-click to set the size to 700px, keep your brush exactly in the middle of the eye and without moving left-click 3-4 times. The bloom effect, w00t, looks sexy huh?
Okay, now for the fun part, where your imagination is the limit, from the menu on the top click Image> Adjustments> Variations, a dialog should open, this is where you mix your colors to make all MOAR sexy! We want a tone of blue so click More Blue once and More Cyan once and then repeat it one more time. Here's what it should look like:
Okay, now your going to say wtf the image is all blue, well select your Eraser tool and erase everything except the eye itself, zoom in(Ctrl+NumPadPlus) and erase for perfection, it should look like:
Now, to fine tune this new color of ours, hit Ctrl+L to open up the Levels dialog, or goto Image> Adjustments> Levels, on the dialog select Blue from the Channel drop-down list, you should see 3 sliders, black, grey and white. Pull teh grey(middle) one towards your left until its value becomes 1.25!
Hmmm, sex! OMG! I forgot, please feel extremely free to experiment your heart out on the values and methods I told you just now, its all about what pleases your eyes not mine! You can tinker with the Levels and Variations to find the perfect tone for you.
Getting back to the eye, now, even if you erased the blue part off the eye perfectly, it still doesn't look real, the edges of the eye cant be blue?! Select the Burn tool, set its Exposure to anything below 40%, know that lower is better! I set mine at 15% for superb results and don't forget to zoom in first. Now start burning the edges of the eye with a very low sized brush, umm maybe 70px will do. After you are happy with it move on towards the next step!
Press Ctrl+J to dupe the current layer, a new layer is created by the name, Layer 0 copy 2 and is set active automatically, again goto Image> Adjustments> Variations and click More Yellow twice and More Green twice. It looks crappy, I know, but just hold on with me. Select the Eraser tool and start erasing the outer part of the eye revealing the blue beneath. Don't erase to much now, look at the image below, try to bring it as close to mine as possible:
Press Ctrl+L to bring up the Levels dialog again, select Green from the Channels drop-down, pull the middle slider to your right until the value becomes 0.50 and pull the right slider towards your left until value becomes 240. Click OK.
Now to work on the skin, press Ctrl+E 2 times to merge the layers, press Ctrl+J to dupe it once, press Ctrl+U to bring up the Hue/Saturation dialog, bring the saturation down to -50 and brig the Hue up to +5, click OK. Now select the Eraser tool and erase the eye carefully, such that the skin remain untouched.
Select the Blur tool, set its Strength to 50% and the brush-size to 400px, apply the blur on the top-right and bottom-right lashes to give that artistic touch! This will soften the skin a bit. The entire point of changing the skin color and blurring was to bring focus and beauty towards the eye! Now, press Ctrl+E to merge the layer, you should have only one layer now, press Ctrl+L to bring up the Levels dialog for the final time, pull the middle slider to your right until value becomes 0.70 and the pull the right slider to your left until value becomes 235.
Again, if you want to you can play around to your liking with the Variations, Levels, Blurring, Dodging, Burning and the Saturations if you want!
Well, thats it! You're finally done, heres what mine looks like:
I know its not the best, but the results vary every time you make one, thats the funny part in eye manips, you can create 10 different versions using the exact same methods, lol.
This really took me a while to write, more than 3 hours to be precise, hope you made something of it! If you did, drop it in my drop-box on my profile; I would love to see it! X)
Ive revised this a couple of times, but i know that there maybe mistakes in it still. so any correction will be highly appreciated!
Hope this helped! And thank you for reading!
I would like to give all teh credit, thanks and hugs to ~vanityinsecurity who taught me eye manip in the first place. She's the best!
