Spectator Camera

A Tutorial for Team Fortress 2

Well, after seeing some tutorials on how to make a spectator camera and not having them work, I looked through the various entities and found out that Team Fortress 2 uses a completely different entity for spectating. This entity is called info_observer_point. So, without further ado, let's begin! Step 1 Go to the entity tool, and scroll until you find "info_observer_point", and align it in the world somewhere. Wherever the camera lens is pointing, you will see it from that angle. Try to imagine yourself as the camera for the best results. Unlike the "point_viewcontrol" entity, this entity does not require an "info_target" to point at. Step 2 Look at the screenshot of Hammer on the right. ------> These are what the following options do: Name: Name of the entity. If it will be affected by another entity, this is how it will be referred to. Team: Makes the camera exclusively visible to the team of your choosing. Pick "any" to make the camera usable by both teams. Pitch Yaw Roll: Defines rotation of the entity. Don't worry about this option, as you can rotate it outside of this menu, like you would rotate a brush or other entity. Associated Team Entity: Used for CP maps. Use this to define what entity has to be owned by the other team in order to use the camera. Welcome Point: This defines whether this will be the first camera seen by someone just connecting to the server. Defining "Yes" on more than one of these cameras may cause issues! FOV: Field of Vision. Just like how you can edit your field of vision in the options menu, you can edit how much you can see within the camera. I personally use 90, haven't tried it with the default 0 or 75, although I have doubts it matters. Conclusion This concludes everything you need to know about the unique-to-TF2 spectator camera. If you have any more questions or comments on how to improve this tutorial, please post! Thanks for viewing, -strangemodul3

Sorry for pulling up this old tutorial. For testing, I added two observers (one for each team). While the blu_observer is working fine, the red_observer isn't. I did set each observer for the correct team, but during the respawn, red player is viewing with the blu_observer (I can cycle through both though). Any help is appreciated.

Pros: Very readable, quick and to the point. Gets the message across. Cons: Nada. Improvements: Don't have much to offer here; you covered what you said you were going to cover, and you did it well. Notes: Great tutorial. Frankly, This is very often overlooked in the gaming world, and I know that I will now be implementing this on my maps. Thanks!

Wow this is great stuff! It's kind of weird this information doesn't seem to be the wiki at the Valve wiki page. Thanks a bunch! :)

Posted by Termaximus Thanks for info, but I am having a problem and perhaps you can help. I put in three info_observer_points, one for welcome, one for red to view center cp when they have control and one for blue to view center cp when they have control. The welcome camera works find at startup, spectating and death. The others don't appear to be working. When I test map, cap center point then die, I only have option of the welcome camera not the others. Any thoughts?
Well, first of all make sure Welcome Camera is set to "No" on those cameras. Also, I cracked open dustbowl, the camera needs to be tied to the trigger_capture_area, and have Team set to "Any".
