This tutorial will cover how to change his name from chapter 3 and beyond with just a few basic steps.
Programs used in this tutorial:
- Dolphin Emulator
- Dolphin Memory Engine. - Click To Download
Step 1
Run your Dolphin emulator and boot up your Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door then load up your current saved file.Step 2
Run Dolphin-Memory-Engine (if you haven't downloaded it from the link above, please do so). With your game already running on Dolphin Emulator, the Dolphin-Memory-Engine should automatically hook itself to the current game running. You should see the "Unhook" selection, meaning the program already connected itself to the game. If not, hit the "Hook" option.Step 3
Right under the "First Scan" option, you'll see a drop down menu. By default, it will say "Byte". Hit the arrow and scroll down the menu and select "String". There's nothing else you need to adjust.Step 4:
Now search for the exact name you named. Your game is still running so you can check his name there. Since I basically named mine as "Yoshi", I'm going to type that into the text box and hit "First Scan"The scan searches for any strings that connects to the name "Yoshi". Since the name is used in many parts inside the game's internal files and the Yoshi Partner himself (because I named him that) the result I had was pretty large that the memory engine has found. If you gave your Yoshi partner an uncommon name. your result may be less which will be much easier for you.
Step 5:
Click the "Add All" option to add the list down to the bottom box. Under the value section, you can double-click on the name of your Yoshi partner and edit his name. Since my partner's name is "Yoshi" I have to go through a huge list until I get the right string I'm looking for. While you're testing the name, the best thing to do right now is double-clicking your partner's name in the memory engine, and do a simple letter like "s". With your game still running, if you see your Yoshi partner's name changed to just the letter "s". That means you figured out the correct address for his name!
Step 6:
Once you've found out his name, you can simply change his name to what you prefer. By default, you can give your Yoshi partner a different name that's equal to, or lower, to the amount of letters that composes his name. So mine is "Yoshi" and it's 5 letters, I can give him the name "Luigi", because it's also 5 letters. Adding 1 more letter, will prevent you because the length is too much. But don't freak out, you can increase the length of his name by double-clicking the set of numbers and letters in the address section that corresponds to his name, and a window will popup.
Let's say I want to give my yoshi partner the name "Waluigi". In the mini window at the "length" section, the current length is "5" so any name that has at least 5 letters in it can fit the amount. Since Waluigi is "7" letters, I'm gonna put "7" in the length and then hit "OK."
Now I can change "Luigi" into "Waluigi" without the message appearing, and when I check my game in the emulator that's still running, you can see that your Yoshi Partner's name increased into a much longer name!
Step 7
Once you've given your mini-yoshi a new name, just simply hit the save block in the game, and the save data will record his new name! You can now exit the memory engine for dolphin, and you're all done!Notes:
It occurred to me that naming the Yoshi partner in chapter 3 only consists of 8 characters and below. If you want to give your Yoshi partner a longer name, like simply Baby Yoshi for example (yes the spacing counts), that would make 10 characters in his name, you'll have to first give him a shorter name, then use Dolphin Memory Engine to change it to a longer one afterwards.
