Installing VPK with VPK Manager

A Tutorial for Team Fortress 2

Manage your TF2 VPK easily!

This tutorial is how to install Team Fortress 2 mods (VPK) using the VPK Manager.

1. Setting Up VPK Manager

Once you've download and extract the VPKManager executable to a safe location, click on it.

You may create a desktop shortcut so it will be easier for you to execute it.

A First-Time Setup wizard will walk you thorough, follow the guide on the screen. If you're unsure, read through the tutorial before proceeding.

1.1. VPK Folder

The VPK folder is where new VPK (extracted from its archive) or unused (when you 'uninstall' it) will be stored. Ensure that the VPK folder is NOT a restricted folder that requires you to run the VPK Manager as administrator.

For me, I have multiple storage drive, thus, I set it as 'D:\VPK'. You may want the VPK in your 'Downloads\VPK'.

1.2. Team Fortress 2 Custom folder

The ability to locate the Team Fortress 2 is very limited, if you have Steam on C:\ but the games stored else where, you may need to manually locate it.

However, for me, I have my Steam and games in the same D:\ drive, so that's why it appears like in the image shown.

1.3. VPK Back-Up

This is an optional part. Like VPK Folder, you have to create a VPK Back-Up folder and locate it.

You can set the scheduling to your own liking, it has Daily, Weekly, Monthly, and Manual.

If you either skipped or completed the VPK Back-up, you're ready to use the VPK Manager.

2. Extracting The TF2 Mod

Open up the VPK folder which you created, as well as the archive which you downloaded off from GameBanana or other websites.

Follow the instructions if it has multiple options, however, the common factor is that you simply need to follow this: Drag-n-Drop the VPK file into the VPK folder.

If you want multiple versions installed, just drag-n-drop and renamed them.

For example in the archive, it contains these:

  1. Colour Red -> GB_Skin.VPK
  2. Colour Blue -> GB_Skin.VPK
  3. Colour Green -> GB_Skin.VPK

Just extract the first VPK to the VPK folder, renamed, and continue. So, once you've finish renaming, it should look something like this in the VPK folder:

  1. GB_Skin_red.VPK
  2. GB_Skin_blue.VPK
  3. GB_Skin_Green.VPK

3. 'Installing' the TF2 mod

Open up the VPK Manager (if you closed after setting it up), you will see that on the left list box, it contains the VPK files in the VPK folder. The right list box will list all of the VPK (if you have existing mods).

If you have VPK manager opened, click the Refresh button  to update the list boxes.

You can multiple select the mods you wished to install. For this example, I'll be installing my GreyArmy Rocket Launcher and Shotgun.

Click on the Install button.

As you can see, both VPKs are now installed to the tf/custom folder.

The application may be unresponsive, if the VPK file size is very large, or multiples.

If you have existing VPK, it will be overwritten by the files from the VPK folder.

3.1. Install All

There's an option to Install All of the VPK files. Click on the drop down button and click on 'Install All'.

The application may be unresponsive, if the VPK file size is very large, or multiples.

If you have existing VPK(s), it will be overwritten by the files from the VPK folder.

3.2. Notice In Load Order

By default, Valve is sorting the mods via alphabetical order. I can't do much.

3.3. Not Supported

Unfortunately, as of this time of writing this tutorial, unpacked mods (folder mod) are not supported.

Mods from Steam Workshop are unsupported.

4. 'Uninstalling' the TF2 mod

You can multiple select the mods you wished to uninstall. For this example, I'll be uninstalling my GreyArmy Rocket Launcher and Shotgun.

Click on the  Uninstall button.

As you can see, both VPKs are now uninstalled to the VPK folder.

The application may be unresponsive, if the VPK file size is very large, or multiples.

If you have existing VPK(s), it will be overwritten by the files from the tf/custom folder.

4.1. Uninstall All

There's an option to Uninstall All of the VPK files. Click on the drop down button and click on 'Uninstall All'.

The application may be unresponsive, if the VPK file size is very large, or multiples.

If you have existing VPK(s), it will be overwritten by the files from the VPK folder.
