A nice and easy tutorial on how to get started in retexturing!

How to edit textures for models in Breath of the Wild:

1. What you will need  :

Any image editor (I would recommend Photoshop, but anything works)
The file you want to edit [usually Armor/Weapon_XXX_XXX.sbfres for models and Armor/Weapon_XXX_XXX.Tex1.sbfres for textures].

2. How to do it :

Open toolbox.exe in the folder with Switch Toolbox's files.

Drag and drop your texture and model files into it (or click in File/Open and choose them manually)

Toolbox should open up a model with the texture on it if you did everything right.

Click in the + icon in Armor/Weapon_XXX_XXX.Tex to expand then expand the Textures folder.

You should get 3 files for weapons and 9 files for Armor Sets, ending in alb, nm and spm.

Alb is the texture itself and what we will use, Nm is the Normal Map of the file which is basically the in-game relief of the file. This tutorial won't cover how to edit that. SPM is useless for most files, just being its depth which models already take care of.

Then, right-click the ALB file and select Export or hit Control + E

Change the file extension from .bftex to either .png or .jpg and save it in whichever folder you like.

  • Don't close Toolbox yet, but open the file in the image editor of your choice.

If you know what colors you need to edit then just do that. Save the new file.

  • Open up Toolbox, select the texture ALB and select the Replace option or hit Control + R. Choose the file you just modified.

If you did everything right, the new model should use the texture you just made, otherwise you messed something in one of the previous steps.

When everything is working, right click  Armor/Weapon_XXX_XXX.Tex and select Export or hit Control + E

  • Make sure you rename the file to end in .Tex.sbfres because Toolbox automatically renames it to .Tex.bfres which won't work.

  • Turn the file into a mod with BCML and install through it (tutorial on how to do it coming soon)

There you go! You just made your first retexture mod! Check out my other mods! (Only Switch BotW mods atm, sorry Cemu users :P!)

Thanks for the tutorial. Just a suggestion - it could be made more readable by adding headings, and you can also turn on the table of contents feature, which will automatically create a quick navigation system at the top.
