Extract game files for use with odyssey editor

A Tutorial for Super Mario Odyssey

This guide is for windows but most of the concepts apply to Linux and probably OSX

Have an NSP of the base game
Have an NSP of the latest update for the game (I cannot tell you where to get these but homebrew general may be able to tell you where)
have prod.keys

Software required for extraction:
NCA-NSP-XCI to LayeredFS extractor

  1. extract the zip you downloaded before into a folder of its own this will be referred to as exdir for this tutorial
  2. add prod.keys to exdir
  3. rename prod.keys to keys.ini making sure to say yes to changing the file extension
  4. run NCA-NSP-XCI_TO_LayeredFS.bat
  5. type 2 and press enter
  6. type 3 and press enter
  7. locate your base game nsp (the larger of the two) and drag it over the command prompt then press enter
  8. do the same for the update nsp (the smaller one) when asked
  9. press enter when it is finished
  10. then type q and press enter
  11. navigate back to exdir
  12. create a new folder called extraction (exdir\extraction)
  13. type cmd into the address bar of file explorer as seen here
  14. type:
    hactool.exe -t romfs --outdir extraction Ready_LayeredFS_Game\romfs.bin
  15. wait while it saves each file
  16. you can now use exdir\extraction as the game location asked for when you start odyssey editor for the first time

I made this because when I wanted to get into modding odyssey there where no guides for how to set up the files necessary to use odyssey editor one of the most heavily utilized tools for modding the game. This makes it so you can only really start messing around and creating levels after about 5 hours worth of trial and error, so by making this hopefully the community will grow significantly.

really good tutorial, if dumping nsp does not work for you (it never worked for me) you can dump the nca files of both the game and the update, first of all use HactoolGUI which requires Hactool (make sure you have prod.keys in the HactoolGUI folder) click on Extract PFS0 choose your nsp file for imput file and choose where the nca files will go with output folder (i recommand choosing a unique folder for each nsp) (do it for both the game nsp and the update nsp) you will get a whole lot of nca files. second of all if your base game is an xci use Hactool (make sure you have prod.keys in the Hactool folder) full_extract_xci.bat (drag your xci to full_extract_xci.bat) this will dump the game and the nca files after the process keep all of the nca and delete the dump finally when you have all nca files use NCA-NSP-XCI to LayeredFS extractor type 1 press enter, type 3 press enter, type 2 press enter, drag the biggest game nca to the program, drag the biggest update nca to the program open your biggest update nca with (HxD)  then find the line 000000180 in this line, copy the text looking like this: EX AM PL E1 this text is the title key of the update game so copy it to the program and make sure to REMOVE THE SPACES between each 2 letters or numbers after copying it now press enter on the program it should start dumping the game and the update files to use with the Odyssey Level Editor
