KH2FM Modding Tut #1 - Setup, Dumping, Patching - A Tutorial for Kingdom Hearts II - Final Mix.

1. Intro

Hello everyone, and welcome to first in a series of KH2FM Modding tutorials! In this tutorial, we will be learning how to set up our environment for dumping and patching the game, as well as how to dump and patch!
If you aren't already aware, KH2FM modding is a little bit different from other games. Due to the formatting of the ISO, we can't simply just replace the files on the ISO and have it work. It's a little bit complicated, but if you follow this series of tutorials to the T, you should have no problem at all.

Before we begin, you should know that this tutorial is for Windows users ONLY. Linux and Mac users are out of luck, sorry! We will also be using the Command Prompt a fair bit, so you should at least know how to navigate around in it, and how to write commands. All right, lets get started!

2. Tools Needed

Here are the tools you will need to dump your game and set up the patcher:

  • A clean, unmodified KH2FM ISO (We cannot, and will not, link you to this. Google is your friend)
  • GovanifY's KH2FM Toolkit (Source)
  • PCSX2 for Windows
  • A powerful enough computer to emulate KH2FM
  • A decent bit of knowledge on how
  • Time and patience

3. Section 1: Setup

This section will show you step by step how to set up your KH2FM Toolkit environment for modding.

  1. Create a new folder named "KH2FM_Toolkit".
  2. Extract the contents of kh2fmtoolkit.zip into the newly created folder.
  3. Drag and drop your KH2FM ISO into the folder, and rename it to "KH2FM.iso", case sensitive.
  4. Done! You are now ready to move on to the next section.

4. Section 2: Dumping

This section will teach you how to dump your ISO so you can modify the game's files.

  1. Navigate to the KH2FM_Toolkit folder we made in the last section.
  2. On the Nav Bar on the top of the window, (The one that shows the current directory you are in) click it, type "cmd", and press Enter. This should bring up a Command Prompt window.
  3. In this window, type "KH2FM_Toolkit -extractor" and press Enter. When prompted, press "Enter" to dump your ISO.
  4. This process could take anywhere from 5-15 mins, depending on your hard drive/SSD speeds. Please be patient, this will take a while.
  5. When everything is done, 2FM Toolkit should tell you to press Enter to continue. Do so, and you should now see a folder called "Export" in the same folder as the patcher. That is the game files!
  6. You have now dumped your game! Continue on to the next section to learn how to patch.

5. Section 3: Patching

This section will teach you how to patch mods into your ISO. Before we start, there currently is *no way* to test mods without patching your ISO every time, or mucking about with RAM in PCSX2.

  1. Navigate to the KH2FM_Toolkit folder we made in Section 1.
  2. Place any *.kh2patch file you want to use in this directory, so 2FM Toolkit can see them.
  3. On the Nav Bar on the top of the window, (The one that shows the current directory you are in) click it, type "cmd", and press Enter. This should bring up a Command Prompt window.
  4. In this window, type "KH2FM_Toolkit.exe {"patch files"}"EX: KH2FM_Toolkit.exe "mod1.kh2patch" "mod2.kh2patch" "mod3.kh2patch"
  5. After the toolkit scans through the patches you entered, press Enter to patch your ISO. This can take anywhere between 5-15mins depending on your hard drive speeds. Please be patient.
  6. After everything is done, it should ask you to press enter to continue. Do so, and you should now see a new ISO was created in the 2FM Toolkit directory, labeled "KH2FM.NEW.ISO". This is your modded ISO!
  7. Now, you can go ahead and run your modded ISO in PCSX2. You should now see your changes applied.

6. Conclusion

Congratulations! You now know how to patch your ISO, and now have all the game's files available. Next tutorial will cover creating patches with mods you've made. Happy Modding!
