Valve Tries to Stiff Apple

Wanting Steam / Valve products on Apple?? Sure, you cough up the dough for it.

This is quite possibly the worst chunk of change that Valve has requested. Poor calling on their part. Lets have a Apple, a successful business, cough up a million dollars to port a single game?? Ok. Awesome. Thanks.
In a recent interview, Valve’s Gabe Newell spoke about Valves lack of support for Apple’s OS X platform. Newell confirmed that Valve were in talks with Apple, but said that nothing more happened because Apple couldn’t stay focused. However, there’s another side of that story. According to Inside Mac Games, Apple did talk to Valve, but Valve demanded a million dollars up front in order to port Half Life to OS X, which most likely ended the talks. One can understand why Valve would demand such an amount up front, primarily because porting to OS X isn’t easy, and because sales of the game would most likely be only a fraction of the PC sales. On the other hand, one can certainly understand Apple’s decision - a million dollars is a million dollars. To read the full interview with Valve’s MD, Gabe Newell, click here.
[SOURCE] Funny considering there are plunty of games already for the Mac. Bungie plans to port to Mac. FIFA '08 might come to Mac just as well. Mistake?

I saw this before. 1 million isn't a lot, considering it would also bring the porting of the Steam Client onto OSX based computers.

Wouldn't this also mean that the source engine would be ported as well? Or is this referring to the original Half life?

No no, it just porting a SINGLE game (Half Life). This is not bringing the client to OS X. By the way, added links to other games to the main post.

You don't need Steam for Half-Life 1. It was stand-alone also. Still, I mean, Windows isn't that expensive. You can buy a basic Windows XP or 2000 and still play the newer games, for now at least. Stupid Vista. -.- Mac's are for production Windows are better for Gaming If people want to play games on a computer, don't buy a Mac. -.-

Good because MAC's are terrible. Seriously though Windows is good for gaming, MAC is good for graphics and movies. I have used both in both situations.

You also have to remember this. 1. Valve had just started up, meaning they had to borrow ass loads of money 2. They had to gain as much money as they can(1 million) In actuality, Valve was probably in debt in untill pre-hl2 release.

Actually cookie, GOLDSRC,(the hl engine) doesn't use DirectX as its primary renderer. GOLDSRC was a modded Quake 1 engine, based highly off of OPENGL.

Well apple is provides both hardware and software for their products and if they want valve to port games, i think its not a bad deal. If you want a company to develop software for you, they aren't going to do it for free. Its not open source, its actually the most closed market in computers. I don't blame valve. Also the games that have been developed for mac are just ported by a 3rd party, not really by the developer.

To be honest thats not a whole lot of money to ask for software development. When talking about the size of these companies, a million dollars is nothing.

Guys, why don't you take my post seriously. Valve was extremely in debt, needed money, and probably had a mac port as a very low priority. Believe me, If mac became commonly used, and more games were ported to it, hell yeah I'd get one. Windows is a very sloppy I feel in comparison to the apple os, but thats not happening.

Like this one Cookie? :3 Anywho, I'm just going to stick with my opinion that, if you want to do a lot of gaming with mimimal to no productivity.(I guess you can call it?), then get Windows. If you're going to do little gaming with a lot of productivity, get a Mac. I see why Mac would want to port the games. People do have spare time. They might work a lot on the computer, but from time to time they would like to play a game other than Solitaire (or what ever games they come with :3).

How so? I have all of my old Macs and they work just fine, no upgrades. You'd also be an idiot to buy RAM from Apple, they only sell it to their many wealthy customers. I'm fundamentally against the "buy a new video card every two weeks" culture that some of you are a part of, but that's how the high end gaming market has evolved so as ZeroOrDie pointed out it's a clear cut weakness for the Mac platform in terms of certain gamers.
Point 1: You have all your old MACs, with a PC, you can stick with one and continually upgrade as needed instead of buying more MACs, which is probably why Apple is staying afloat in that region of sales, old MAC users buying MORE Macs. Besides I don't see th epoint of buying a whole new MAC, when you can buy a PC, and be able to upgrade it, costly yes, but much more efficient than going out and buying another MAC, just to put your old one in corner of your garage where it will not see daylight until a tornado hits.

I believe so, actually X. Anyway, one point that Apple is forcing older Mac users to buy new shit is the whole Leopard (?) OS will not be able to run on any of the G4/5 series machines. Nice job whoring out your system and forcing people to buy MBs and MBPs (MacBook and MacBook Pro's).

Negative, many many PC users do the exact same thing. You're forgetting where you are - an FPS gaming customization site. What's more, many people replace most of the expensive components in their computers when they upgrade anyway, making the "upgrade" little more than a new computer with the same case and spare parts.
Yes but theres actually a purpose and cause to upgrade a costly component, if you want to stay on the gaming frontier, or whatever you may call it. And I'm not sure if can compare upgrades on a PC to buying an entirely different MAC, thats like replacing all the parts of a computer, even the case, and calling it the same computer, doesn't work that way. Whe nyou buy a different MAC, its not the same computer, when you buy a new graphics card for your PC, its still the same PC with upgraded components, show me the similarity.

I have the ability to do that with my current program to run Windows. I am about to probably buy Fusion and trash Parallels out the window (lol). I am also looking to just run Boot Camp here when I buy my external harddrive. Options options options. On the subject, I still feel Valve was trying to stiff so much out of Apple for just a simple game. I, loosely saying this, do not feel it would be very hard to port over to Mac.

They made a lot more than a million by jacking the price of the iphone for 2 months. They make more that enough to spend a million on an experiment with valve. Valve would not benefit cause developing one game for apple isn't their business model. They have thousands of games available on steam from hundreds of companies that delivers all of this content to you via internet. You never have to worry about losing your cd key or breaking the CD. You just gotta log in and download. So why should they go out of their way to develop for a platform they have no history with? Blame them all you want but they're a company too. why spend time and effort on something that could be worthless? not to mention a huge chunk of whats available on steam is free.

What giving people easy access to games and other FREE content is a bad business model for a video game company? Maybe if apple had a game development backing this would make sense, but they have a history of having a worthless native game catalogue. Game development is a two way street between developer and platform. It isn't valve's fault apple hasn't pursued any companies. And Valve said they've had many talks with apple about this and they never followed up. Seems to me apple isn't serious about it. Not so much the other way around.

Yea i see your point too but to me it seems as if the platform doesn't care weather it has the games or not. Which is fine, but that means valve won't go out of their way to develop for it. And for the topic of the thread, valve isn't stiffing anyone in my eyes. Let me be clear though. Steam has a lot of problems and can be a pain in the ass. They need to work on getting it fixed and working right before they develop for other platforms. Though, i'm waiting to see how the orange box works on the xbox. Also being able to play console vs comp...could be cool.

If i already had access to 95% of the computer market i'd be charging Apple millions too. Obviously Apple initiated the talks with Valve. Valve can charge whatever they want, it's no skin off their back. Apple users have nothing to do except organise their iphotos into icategories. They ported BF2142, but i bet they had to be EA's bitch to get it, just like they'll need to be Valve's bitch to get Steam.

Its common knowledge that if you want to take some pictures and listen and make slide shows 24 hours a day or just run itunes (which surprisingly works on a pc anyway) you get a mac. But if organizing photos doesn't sound fun, you would just buy a pc with Windows on it and do all that stuff plus be able to game, without having to buy/download special version of everything just to use.

Apple should have just stuck with iPods and not returned to the computer business.

You seem very against Apple. That is not what this thread is looking for, espically considering your last post seemed pretty much like a post straight out of a pro-Windows website. Also, Mac did computers way before iPods and what not. Why would a major successful company built off its main products all the sudden drop it and sell a simple music player. Please think logically before posting.

No, I'm not against Apple. It is just that Apple has a ways to go before it is a good competition for Microsoft. And I know that Apple made computer awhile ago, I used to own one. they use to have to black and green monitors, with basic puzzles games. Those where good times, but I think that Apple need to start getting more games and other programs compatible before they start making a serious impact.

Posted by Cookie Well, that's what companies do, they make money. That doesn't make it a good thing from a user / customer perspective though.
Thats not on valve. And like i said before, apple's effort to get games on their computers hasn't been stellar. Sounds like apple needs to embrace this market better than they've done in the past if they want it.

Yes, $teve Job$ will have to be Gabe Newell's bitch for a week in order to get steam, then be his bitch for a month to get the games.

It would be nice to see companies making some of their games for both Windows and Mac, sort of like how it is done with consoles. It just seems that companies don't want to take the chance in producing games for the Mac with respect to money, of course.

Apple is not going for the young, gamer kids though. Their market is generally Schools, College kids, and graphical professions. Another factor is their price; no middle American (or any other country) would be able to just drop the money for a high end Laptop for their kid to play a game on. Apples focus is not the gaming community. I think that is another role that played in either dismissing or turning down the offer.

True, but alot of students enjoy the gaming part of a computer as well as being able to do school work, computer artwork, etc. Plus alot of schools go with Windows because they can get large amounts of pc's for a small amount of money. They usually get deals through HP or Compaq.

Epic is one of the only companies that can do that though, Look at the companies that do ports to mac. Blizzard-Do I need to explain why they have money? EA-Gaming Giant Epic-Every game in the world uses Unreal 3 engine.

You seem very confused. Apple has been making excellent computers non-stop for 31 years. Mac prototypes were even used in the software development for the original Windows OS.
Sorry if my posts were not worded very well. It just seems that Microsoft and Windows has become so popular that the causal computer users tend to overlook Mac's because it is "different" then what they have seen most people using. To tell to the truth I was looking to buy a Mac before I got this laptop, but I want to be able to play my current games on it -_-.

Yes, blizzard can do it, except Vivendi ported WoW to the mac.

You make it sound like making a game for Mac is flushing money down the toilet. I don't have Blizzard's financial information, but I'd bet anything they make more selling their games to Mac users than they spend making them Mac compatible.
I'm not saying that at all. I'm just pointing out a lot of companies don't have the resources or time to port to macs.
