This is not exclusive to the source engine,
however, it offers several features that other games do not. Examples
are: Sound recorded along with video, (in half life based games sound
had to be recorded separately or not at all), and the ability to record
straight to video, rather than recording to separate image frames, and
having to piece them together.
Startmovie should be used when the game is ‘run in
a window’ at the resolution you plan to capture at (bigger resolution =
bigger filesize). In the options > sound tab, speaker configuration
should be set to 2.1, otherwise your audio files will appear blank.
Framerate (host_framerate xx) is a choice thing,
personally I tend to use a very high framerate, as it makes slowing
down clips look very nice, and creates a nice motion blur effect at
normal speed. However, the more frames you have, the bigger the
filesize will be, recording at 60 fps rather than 30 fps will give you
roughly double the filesize. Personally I either record at 60, or 120
fps, depending on what I think I will do with the clip, its important
to record at multiples of what your final project fps will be at, so if
your final project fps is 25, you would record at 25, 50, 75, 100 and
Google is your friend.
And sorry... I'm not going to watch it with that horid framerate.

I see no lag in this at all.
I agree. I have no idea what most of you are moaning about.
I have never made my own frag video, but I intend to. I hear FRAPS is the better choice over the demo in the console, but if that is the command module in the bottom right for it I think I'll skip unless it can be removed and preferably hot key'd.

Next time you make a movie, remove the demoui.
Agree but the rest is OK.
