OK, my CS:S game cache files have 8% fragmentation. Quite often I get reminders when lauching the game to defrag because it will affect my performance. So I use the Steam game defrag tool and my system defrag tool (like it recommends) but it somehow manages to stay on 8%. Anyone else have this problem? Anyone know how to fix it? If you've had high fragmentation before and you lowered it reply with how you did it please. I'm also curious about other things though. Like, how does it get this way and how much is it really affecting my game performace? If you've got any questions or answers about cache file fragmentation, feel free to post.

This usually happens if your hd is nearly full. It can't defrag as well as it can with a mostly empty hd because there isn't as much room for it to move the files around. If you transfer some stuff off your hd onto disc and free up some space on your computer then it should defrag better and leave you with 0% fragmentation.

I'm not really sure how much it affects performance but I know that a high amount of fragmentation means that game files take slightly longer to load as they have to be located from different part of your hd as opposed to the same cluster.

Hope that helps a bit, Matt.

Well I kinda already knew most of that but thanks for posting anyway. I have a program installed (GCFScape I think it's called) it allows you to extract files from your cache and I've used it alot before, mainly for working on a mod. I think extracting alot of stuff from this might have to do with some of the fragmentation. I guess I will try your method w/ the CD. Also btw I have 35% free space on my hard drive with the Steam directory.
    Developing at its best
