Sv_pure destroys modding for CSS

Hello to all fellow FPSB forum hoppers and modders. I was hoping that you could all spare a minute of your time to give me your thoughts on Valves new anti-hack "device", sv_pure. Well, to describe it, it basically just destroys all modding for CSS because it restricts the use of custom Materials on ALL secure servers..which the majority of players use. So that means NO more custom weapon skins, NO more player skins, NO more map skins or props! Personally i think this is a bit rash? What are your thoughts?

    I find it good that you cant customize levels cause you could easily make a wallhack, but the thing about custom weapons is just a bit to harsh!

    On the otherhand there would be ALLOT! less cheating!

    Zippit has a point - but the other thing is, that means anything related to CS:S on this site would be gone. It wouldn't exist until someone could get around it.

    It still is pretty good because of wallhacking reasons, which isn't a cheat by VAC, but a cheat by sever, that would be pretty awesome.

    Aren't the majority of the major cheats (aimbots, speedhacks, etc) external files that would not be detected by this anyways?

    If it's going to kill customization, I won't be happy, but atleast custom maps (which are my favorite part) aren't affected.

    If you just think... I'm not explaining how but its possible... if done it myself because I wanted to see if it was possible.

    I don't think this is going to kill customization, but more putting a brake on it cause not all server are going to put sv_pure on.

    It sounds like quite a primitive way to stop cheaters. Isn't this how Punkbuster works? I know that some play so seriously that any tiny detail giving the slightest advantage isn't allowed. However for just playing around outside the huge championships, the kind of skins usually found around here, is just fine...

    HOLY CRAP? Are you saying it would affect maps too??? That would be insanely stupid. Skins (again i'm talking about most of what you find here) are clientside. The server admin would decide to have sv_pure on or not right? Well the admins also choose the maps, so it would be a horribly stupid restriction...
    Again, only useable for those playing huge championships...

    Meh i still think its BS.. i mean, if anyone here plays on GameArena servers, like myself, they've blocked all custom materials already. So when you go to join it just comes up with consistency errors. Its all so lame!

    I think it will only affect maps with custom textures. I'm not sure but I'll check if I can find a source for this news.

    It affects EVERYTHING. It means NO more custom materials, period. For anything, weapons, maps, props, players... hence the name "Pure".

    So custom maps are still available but not with custom textures..

    Consider this to simply be a check on consistency for more than weapons. I'm guessing that only servers which set sv_consistency 1 are going to be setting sv_pure 1. This will not affect custom maps or custom textures, what it will affect is retextures of the default maps. From what I'm reading this new system may actually work fairly well since what it's supposed to do is if the server has sv_pure 1, then even if you have custom materials or models installed it loads everything from the GCF so you can still play on the server just without your custom content, and then if you go to a server with sv_pure 0 your custom content will be loaded again. Also they are claiming that it can even check that custom textures on custom maps are consistent.

    What?

    How does allowing server owners to disable using custom content ruin the point of mods? I don't see a real connection there. The way I see it, is that server owners who want to allow the use of custom stuff will allow it, and the ones that are more concerned about cheats, will not. It might reduce the number of servers you will be able to see your modded weapon models/sounds/skins/etc on, but it does not exactly kill mods.

    I only use player skins but still i think every one would just turn sv_pure 0!

    The thing I like most about this is that instead of simply not allowing you to play, this cvar will force you to load your content from the gcf and not actually make you need to remove your custom material to play on that server.

    Yeah, exactly. That's really what sold me on it. I mean, otherwise it would be this "mod killer" people are making it out to be, because you'd have to remove all your stuff to play on specific servers. But it's not like that. It won't affect them at all. All it does is make you play with the stock ones while on that server.
    Seriously, if this prevents alot of cheaters, then I don't exactly think having to play with the stock models/skins/whatever (ON SOME SERVERS) is really a big price to pay.

    As soon as it came out you would have every single CS:S modding community working on ways around it. It really would not last very long.

    No NEW maps are still available... but like orignal maps like de_dust2 and de_office, if you make a skin for that you cant use because its a custom material.

    all servers will be "fitted" with sv_pure. there will be an update for all the current servers, and all servers released or rented after the release date will have sv_pure

    This will also make ZBlock pretty much obsolete (and non-functional). The new sv_pure system allows servers to force clients to use STOCK content only (this applies for any Valve textures, models, sounds, etc). The beauty of it is you don't need to remove your custom content to play on pure servers, the client will simply ignore custom content and load the stock content only (located in the game GCF).

    But what about maps with custom textures?

    I'd rather have no cheaters than custom skins. :|
    Just go play in non-secure servers if you want to play with your custom stuff.

    Yes, it is a new cvar and so it will be on all servers after the update, but just because all servers will have the cvar doesn't mean all servers will have the cvar activated. Just look at sv_consistency to see that not all servers enable all cvars.

    This will only affect the standard textures. Custom textures won't be affected at all.
