FPSB's recommended Anti-Virus Software

A Forum Thread for GameBanana

FPSB's Anti-Virus Thread.

FPSBanana's Reccomended Anti-virii Software

I, XSS3, have no affiliation with any of the mentioned anti-virus providers.

My professional opinion I work as a security consultant freelanser for any company or private person requiring my services and who is willing / able to pay. That being said, I'm sure you'd agree I have some knowledge of the average anti-virii program as I deal with them, and the people who create and update, them on a daily basis. With that "authority" I would suggest you get one of the following:
  1. NOD32
  2. Kaspersky
  3. Avast
  4. BitDefender
Normally, any of the ones listed below will do, but those are the best programs out there. If you're prone to receiving virii, or getting hacked, I suggest you stay away from Norton, Norman, Microsoft and F-Secure. Those programs are sufficient for your average user, but they have some serious flaws that can easily be exploited - even by a script kiddy.
Avast Download Price: Free, (extended pay-for versions availiable)
AVG Download Price: Free

BitDefender Download Price: Free, (extended pay-for versions availiable)
Computer Associates Download Trial Price: $39.99

F-Secure Registration for Trial download Price: $69.99
Kaspersky Signup for Trial download link Price: $59.95

McAffee Signup for Trial software Price: $39.99
Microsoft Download Trial Price: $49.95, (covers up to 3 PCs)

NOD32 Download Trial Price: $64.94
Norman Trial Download Signup Price: $24.51

Panda Software Signup for Trial download Price: Unknown (I'd appreciate the information if you have it!)
Symantec Trial Download Signup Price: $29.95

Trend Micro Trial Download Price: $49.95
Zone Alarm Trial Download Price: $19.95

Is any of the information wrong? Are there new versions availiable? Requests? Please message me!

I use McAfee Comes with comcast, and it catches most anything i may get. Haven't had any problems with it. Not like norton where it trys to control a lot of your internet functions.

It has popups, it takes up a ton of space, and it does nothing special. I've seen stuff out there that was free and did 10x as much as Norton, and it took up less space. But that was many reformats ago.

yer, ive got mcafee, it pwns norton any day, it doesnt make you lag in css and it rarley interrupts you when you are browsing the internet or whatever also, i got a virus once, a torrent and all norton did was tell me that i had got a virsu and that it couldnt delete it because it wasn't alowed to be, so my conclusion is: norton = poopee

AVG is really good i use it,but only finds like the main viruses e.g trojen horse and you only really get them by downloading things from uncomon sites,i also have norton antivirus it isnt worth the money and i have never found a virus with it (its crap dont get it....), i used to use avast antivirus it was really good but i got rid of it because it takes 6 hours to scan the whole pc this is no lie,i also use zonealarm securitysuite now this is the best of them all it is a firewall/antivirus/antispyware.

I had McAfee anti-virus. I got a virus using it and it would even acknowledge I had it. Just got Norton Internet Security and it took care of the problem right away. I'll never use McAfee again. But by looking at all the other posts, its just a matter of opinion wich is better.

It's not Microsoft Antispyware. It's Windows Defender.
But I still use Ad-Aware, because
    • it is free
    • Updates to definitions are frequent
    • Scans rather quickly compared to others
    • Can detect non-critical objects like MostRecentlyUsed entries
    But its cons is that
    • You need to pay for the Pro version which comes with the real-time scanner

For antivirus I strongly discourage Norton Anti-Virus as
    • it uses a lot of services and processes, slowing down PC
    • King of memory usage
    • Costs a big bomb
    • Update definitions need to be paid for yearly (not cheap), unlike the other antiviruses
    • VERY slow scanning speed compared to others
    • Norton user interface is laggy and slow

There's no "it" software that will keep you safe. Spybot is not an anti-virus. It is recommended to have more than one PC cleaning tool at your disposal. I use Norton Internet Security (good,$50 yearly) along w/ spyware tools like Spybot Search & Destroy, Adaware, SpywareGuard, and most importantly Registry Mechanic. EDIT: If your PC sucks so much it can't run an anti virus, then throw it out the window.

I'm casting a vote for one not there. Xoftspy. It scans your entire computer in about 2-3 minutes for me and I have 100 GB of small files. It has new updates every few days and you can set it to scan on start-up, so you can turn on your pc, go to the bathroom, come back and it'll be done.
    yar.

I vote for Kaspersky, which is a good option and works very well. I like it because it doesn't really consume much memory and perfomance, it scans all hidden processes and critical areas on startups and is updated very often. It also scans any important program files changes and any registry key that enters the windows, and all this happends in real time. In the mean while, Kaspersky isn't much expensive, well, it is, but is cheaper than other antiviruses like Mcafee and Norton. Now, what i don't really like from Kaspersky is the full scan times. It takes ages to make a full scan of the computer, and even if the real time protection should do the trick, you always have to do a full scan from time to time, right? Other than that, Kaspersky is one of the best antivirus around.
