I have all of my valve games and steam shit on my c: drive on my computer. I want to get it on my external harddrive (e: drive). But this leaves me one problem. Last time I transfered all my shit to my external harddrive when I tried to play any thing that runs off steam or valve or whatever it said that The file's could not be found. And no matter what I did It wouldn't work. Can someone please tell me how to transfer my steam/valve programs onto my external hd with out messing everything up. Thank you.

Hmm not sure if this will work, but you can try creating an image of your hard drive. I'm not a real expert with images, CarL33To does it all the time. You can probably ask him ;).

You need to reinstall it into the E: Drive, WinXP will not recongnize the fact that you moved the files from one drive to the other.

    Goddammit. :(

So wait, if I just copy all my shit that I have in my valve folder and reinstall everything I can just drag it to the newly installed version and all my skins, maps, etc. will be back to normal?

Umm you really CANT do this. Say you got a virus (happens to the best of that) and you lost EVERYTHING. Then you come back and try put VALVe on your comp, off of that HDD. It will not run correct. It will not be your windows reg. So basiclly, if you bought a huge harddrive, you wasted your money. I do not know anyone that has 140GB of just FILES' not programs, files.

You can move the steam folder. Ive done it before. You must delete the Clientregistry.blob file in your steam folder. Other games may require reinstallation, but not always, in fact, sometimes this works to... ahem... different results :) :O

All you really need to back up is the GCF files.

I managed to transfer all my Steam stuff to my external drive, and it works great.

Try running the Steam.exe file after the transfer, in it's new location.
