My vid card sucks, so i'm 100% sure i'm gonna need a new one for Hl2.
But what vid card should i get? Whats the cheapest one that will run Hl2?
I hear radeon 9800 is good, but thats like 200 bucks, and I dont have that kinda money.
im running a gforce fx5200 on one of my machines... it runs things just fine, hell not everyone is willing to shell out 200 bucks for a video card, honestly ati's driver updates can cause some serious problems, and have repeatedly for a few of my good friends, i woud rather have a slower card thats gonna run consistantly and costs less, not everyone spends their free time tweaking thier computer to get the best performance out of it.
Just my oppinion, not taking a swing at ati users.
If you happen to have the money, order an X800 (if you can accomplish the feat of finding one). If you're budget minded, the 9600XT is the way to go. Can't beat it for the price. The in between is the 9800 cards.
If you are just planning to buy hl2, and not doom 3, then don't go all out and buy the x800. Yea it's a very nice card, but for hl2 you won't need anything higher than an 9800 to run it verywell. Upgrade your ram and procesor instead.
DO NOT GET TEH FX 5200pileofcrap
For nvidia, anything above FX 5700ultra =good
ATI 9600XT (get Hl2 for free, and it's about $150)
or a 9800non-pro $170-$200 bucks, and u may be able to soft mod it into a 9800Pro (if it has the L-shaped memory configuration) But the inactive pixel pipelines may be defective, so softmodding only works ~50% of the time.
1gig of ram can make a ton of difference vs 512MB... ive seen the most improvment in UT2k4 (loading times and overall smoothness)
If you can find an ATI 9500Pro, u can softmod it into a 9700Pro, but at retail settings, the 9500Pro is faster than a 9600Pro/XT, because it as 8 active pixel pipelines instead of 4
Hmm, personally owning the ATI 9800, I would recomend it. But if you're lookoing for something cheaper, the ATI 9200 will be able to run Halflife2. Not at a great fps, or as high a resolution, but it will run it above the 800 by 600 setting. Any 128 mb card will work really. The Nvidia 5200 is slightly cheaper than the ATI 9200, but the ATI will get better performance out of HL2 specifically. It might be wise to also spend cash on upgrading your ram if you have less than 512 mb.
