A rant on the Undertale stat calc jank - A Forum Thread for UNDERTALE.

Disclaimer: None of this matters for the player, since they never normally see the ugly side of the stat calculation. For the love of Venus, Toby Fox messed up on the stat calculation, and I hate it. For starters, he has spread out the stat calculations in not one, not even TWO, but THREE separate places! ...That's only a minor inconvenience. Especially if he copied and pasted the code, right? Nope! He rewrote the code three separate times! And you know what? All of them are inconsistent with each other! You have the LOVE up code, which sets your HP, ATK, and DEF to 99 at LOVE 20, then you have the code for leaving battle, which only calculates ATK and DEF and doesn't have a special case for LOVE 20, and THEN you have the code for entering battle, which has a LOVE 20 case, but somehow it was botched so that ATK was set to 30, which is the equivalent of LOVE 11, which is weaker than LOVE 19, what the Venusdamn fuck is going on here?! I'll give Toby Fox the benefit of the doubt. It's amazing the game works as well as it does. And really, when you're playing it, the inconsistent stat calculations NEVER affects you unless you've specifically gone out of your way to get LOVE 20 through the Mettaton glitch or by save editing. But for modders, this makes it quite difficult to make changes to the stats unless you know exactly where to look. The best solution I have found is to make a script that does the stat calculations all in one place, copy and paste the call for the script in the three places it's needed, and NEVER EVER look at those places again. Because the Toby Fox way is a path of madness and LOVE. Okay, rant over, how are your modding projects doing?
