What is "Creative" and "Effort"?
- A Forum Thread for Sonic 3 A.I.R..
June 26th, 2022 - This thread has been edited to be more informational and less off-topic. If you want to view the original (though I do not recommend it) it's linked here. Creativity and what is considered Effort is a very debatable topic. However, in light of events I hope to describe a line (a broad one at that) between what is considered Creativity, and what is considered downright Unoriginal.
For this example, let's take two skin mods that redesign Sonic. One of them changes Sonic's blues to a yellow tone, a recolor if you will. The other one changes Sonic's design to be more akin to looking like Classic Sonic from the game Sonic Generations.
What's the main difference between the two? Let's consider the first one. It doesn't take very much work to change Sonic's color palette from a blue to a yellow. In fact, you can easily do so with basic paint programs and one .png file. In a sense, it's not truly effortful and doesn't show creativity.
On the other hand, the stylized Classic Sonic takes more work. Entirely custom sprites have to be created, as just color palettes won't do the trick by themselves. In a sense, it takes more effort due to this. Additionally, it's more creative as well than Yellow Sonic.
Traditionally, while recolors have helped a bit in learning colors, that's all they really do. If you cannot sprite, try out making audio mods, scripting, or even cooking some rawdata. There's plenty of tutorials available to read up and you could always ask questions about the process.
Welp, idk if my mods can be considered good, but the people liked it and i even modded the rawdata in all of them, so tell me in your opinion if it's fair they get withelded.
Fine I will back down it doesnt share the same beliefs I have but I know I cant change anything.
but uh if anyone wants this to be forgotten about and placed in the past then maybe delete all the posts that started a lot of this. If you do then that probably will let me move on and just repost the new rules post so it doesnt have the comments dragging it down this part is mainly focused on mcginis so maybe also delete this one idk if everyone else agrees on this last part I just think its a way to get rid of the chaos from gamebanna.
I'm honestly glad you made this post, thanks for clearing things up for everyone. Some people just don't know what the difference between low and good effort is sometimes, so they just go attack the rules because of it..
I agree. If it's just a palette swap then that's easy to do. Just pull it up in GraphicsGale and change the colors. If it has more effort, it giving the characters bigger eyes or something like that, then it should stay. I get why some people wouldn't like using Gimp, but GraphicsGale is way faster and easier.
Consider the people who actually want recolours and basic mods. Let me summarize the community here in 4 sentences.
"Hi guys this is a very faithful and cool Master System Palette, hope you-"
"This skin was trashed"
"Hi this is Angel island but orange sky and water"
"Mod accepted keep up the great work bud" Ooo wow there's "Some level design changes" wow i could have never known! What do i do with mine then? Recolour sonic red and green and ALSO change up the base levels a bit? Is THAT how recolours work now? Let's be honest, this modding community is a shitshow and it's all the rules' fault.
There goes my Playdoh Mod lmao, probably might make custom sprites for it if i ever feel like doing so. But tbh i prefer to work on better mods. Can't say i didn't took an effort with that mod tho.
whats the problem with recolors? they have a use. edit: the use? THEY ARE JUST INNOCENT RECOLORS BRUH SHUT UP OR I WILL GIVE YOU A THE PUNISHMENT: https://sonic3airmods.blogspot.com/ note: joke im not giving you a punishment
Literally everything that came up here was destroyed ... even one in which I was for a long time "Dissapointed Sonic" was not with the same name but they had done it in Sonic Mania, I based on that and...why one can stay and another not?
I know this already seems like a complaint but I'll put another, "Blue Knuckles" Yes, it was little effort, that if I understood it, but what I did not understand is that literally someone else had already done it and had not taken off...no I'll give names but it was just really disappointing
Who are you to decide what's fun to play and what is not ?
If a skin is "bad" or "has no use" there won't be an audience for it. A lot of people start getting into skinning any game by doing simple stuff. Upload it, get feedback and learn - rinse and repeat.
The only thing that has no use is yet another discussion about recolors. There were many during the decade I have spent on here. Just be glad your favorite game is that popular. Maybe the trashing and removing is keeping the next big skinner from being motivated to contribute.
Remember, we are all in this for fun, the creation process and being supportive :)
"So something happened YET again in this community. Now, we don't want to become a crap fire, so let's break down what's creative and what's not first."
1: What if someone makes a quick mod for fun, and uploads it, would it have to be taken away(Withheld, etc.)
2: Same scenario, but you can see that people actually really like/enjoy it?
3: Same scenario, but it's the first(or so) mod the creator made, and they're trying to make some mods to start off with/learn about modding, and they decide to upload it since even though it's simple it still seems cool to them?
I'm not trying to rude/override you with questions and stuff, I'm just trying to ask you some things about this, so I can understand more, and so that you don't misunderstand what I'm saying.
I can't help but feel like this is for specifically ME Airway. I mean you withheld my wip mod from not having proper credit, I fix it and you unwithhold it. But anyway I feel like this is all about my first sprite mod, it's my first sprite mod so give me a chance to have people comment on my work. Sure it may be low effort because i'm just copying + pasting sprites from screenshots that I made but i'm doing my sprite mod on my chromebook so I can't do what PC people do with GIMP and overwrite the palettes and sprites.
