Tips? SFM Posters to sprays

A Forum Thread for Team Fortress 2

I just want a picture of a gotdang hotdog!

I"m not new to SFM, got about 4500 hours in it. Thing is though when I make a spray of an SFM poster, I notice tremendous quality loss and pixelation.

Has anyone done this kinda thing enough that they know a few tips either via image editor itself, or advanced VTFEdit parameters? If it matters I'm exporting and using TGA format.

To test I've made a Square version and a raw 16:9 render, both show up fine enough in-game but they do not show up very clear, they look like.... well, bluntly put: they look like jpegs of the original image.

    If you want, I can create that spray for you. Just give me the picture, and I can upload it or PM it to you.

    Try .png instead of .tga perhaps?

            For that, take the .tga render and open it up in Gimp (really, this can be any image), do whatever editing needs to be done and make sure the image resolution is 8^x (ie 128x, 256x, 512x etc). For transparency in the spray you need to use a layer mask by right clicking the layer and adding one, then on the layer mask, white will be opaque and black will be transparent. Every shade of gray is a percentage inbetween.

            Whenever that's all done, use the Gimp plugin to export it as a .vtf file, you can choose to compress it or not but I'd suggest not as it makes it look like a jpeg, which is not what you want. Then, put the .vtf in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\materials\vgui\logos as "spray.vtf" and, if it's not there already, make a "spray.vmt" file.

           Side Note: Don't know 100% if the game factors this file in, but these are the parameters I have in it for a .vtf with transparency.

    "UnlitGeneric"
    {
        "$basetexture"    "vgui\logos\spray"
        "$translucent" "1"
        "$ignorez" "1"
        "$vertexcolor" "1"
        "$vertexalpha" "1"
    }

    Hope I was able to help!
