SketchUp is good for beginners but it may not be ideal for video game modelling.

When I originally wanted to do some 3D modeling and had no clue what to begin with, my original intention was to try to use Blender.

At the time, I didn't manage to get used to the UI and it simply didn't grow on me (even though it is free), so I went ahead and got a free 3 year long license for 3DS Max. Most of 3D modeling I do nowadays (frankly, I haven't done much in the last 365 days), I always do it in 3DS Max.

It felt more user-friendly for a total newcomer than Blender (for me at least) and that's what I ended up using.

3ds max all the way. Blender is not quite begginer friendly.
    Though I use both.
