Okay, okay, it's 3 AM here, I was studying but I'm tired. So, I'm going to talk about something I wanted to do long ago. What's happening to this section? I'm not going to say that before it was better and "oh how I miss the old times" and bla bla bla... But dude, if you're a compiler, of anything, aren't you tired of seeing poor ports from different game engines? A lot of polys in a model with a lot of clipping errors? Broken animations 'n poor rigs?
And what bothers me the most: zero originallity. If you think you're in the list I named, don't take it personal, I just want you to take more seriously your own work. I passed through the same before, I was a noob as everyone once was, I even got a 3/10 from TehSnake. In that moment I was very angry, but then I realized the he was completely fair on his rating/feedback, same happened with other old members. I didn't make a lot of submissions, but I think that I made huge steps from one submission to another. And believe me, I don't wanna sound selfish, but I make this thread in order to express myself and give some tips to other members.
First, quantity is secondary, the most important thing is the quality. If you're going to do something, at least do it fine, doesn't matter if it's a minimal thing, it HAS to be made properly.
Second, DON'T submit models with textures from other game engines, it looks ugly, really ugly, plus, these models are always high poly. I made this kind of submissions in the past, like 2 years ago, then I deleted them. Now I "learned" something and I'm experienced with retexturing. It took me time, yes, but thanks to that, I can make my OWN stuff, and nothing feels more gratifying than that.
Third, practice, try to be an animator, a texturer, a modeler, not only a compiler. Experiment with different programs, such as Photoshop, Blender, 3DS Max, etc. You'll find that everything is related, and eventually, you'll get a better eye to judge your own work. Once you can combine that with your compiler's knowledge, you'll make some serious good submissions, and not only that, them will be ORIGINAL, a word that lacks lately around here...
Fourth, think two times first before submitting, look carefully at the feedback in WiPs section, SUBMIT WiPs, so people can suggest ideas/improvements. And most important, INFORM YOURSELF, search information by your count, watch and learn. Realism IS important.
Five, be modest, yes, try to help as much as you can, but also, try to be the best. Compare yourself with the others. Some people might say this is selfish, but no, in the world you're not alone, so, is important to take someone as a reference, and try to be better. Find rivals and inspiration, not enemies.
Well, I don't know how is people going to take this thread. I'm not the best at comunicating something, but I hope someone can find this thread useful. I can't say I accomplish everything said here, but at least I try, and that's the point here. With nothing else to say, I wish you good luck, I really hope to change something...
The first question here is "Why people still submit something on this old games?"
All i do is porting a model and animations from other game (it's not CSGO because there's too much CSGO Port here)
The model i port is unique, there is a hi-poly and low-poly version (i use the hi-poly for v_ and low-poly for p_ and w_) And every guns part is separated (barrel, body, stock, mag, ext.) So i can make something new from something old (i mix the stock, mag, and extension to create a new combination) For the texture, the original dimension are always under 512x512 and a bit blurry so i use sharping tools in photoshop to make it a little bit better
About poor rig and anim? Yeah, im agree, specially those slow animation (it's really irritating) So I'm using the same animation with thw original game (i even look for a small detail on the animation) with 30 fps in the qc files and it run so damn well
I always comepare my self to my friend who use to be a good member here and i working hard to be better than him
Something like this is always good ;)
Usually i submit something when nobody submit anything in the last 2 days :D So don't worry about my shitty model hehe..
About the second "rules", actually you can use the model and textures from newer engine, but you need extra effort and working on texture adjustment and editing, since the old engine like GoldSrc use static/baked lighting.
I kind of feel the same when it comes to sprays, I mean, might be just me, but I try to put a lot of effort into my stuff and well, not saying I should necessarily get a rating, but lower quality memes and stuff are the ones that really attract people. I just don't get it. Perhaps I'll do different ones.
CS 1.6 is absolutely inactive and I'm saying it this way because I don't want to say it's "dead". While the game itself might still be popular, its modding scene, unless it's the map scene, has pretty much vanished, as you would expect of a game that has two updated versions with one following the formula of the original in a very faithful, nearly identical way - Counter Strike Source. By that same logic, if the modding scene is dead, then you can't expect the WiPs section to be any different either - you'd be lucky to get some useful feedback if any at all. I think that it's just that the natural thing happened here, even if it's sad. I'd say its history is big enough to keep one from worrying about it not getting new original content, though, but that's just my opinion.
Could not agree more. The best advice I have after 10 years - learn modelling and texturing, keep practicing and never quit this shit. Then you can create any existing or non existing gun you like and compile it on someone's animation. I guess people will gladly download fresh stuff.Everyone's happy in the end.The end.
