This Stalker is suffering from a different type of amnesia

Asking here, because Steam Forums are a no-show

Alright I was a recent victim of the Steam Summer Sale, and got a whole buncha games. STALKER SOC and CoP were the tops of my list so I bought em in a heartbeat.

Game runs flawlessly on my really old PC (2007 graphics are the best, more gameplay than fluff)

Irrelevant anecdote aside,
an unusual trouble I've encountered though has made it rather unplayable: I cannot save the game for some reason.

It displays the save load things and even prints "saved (filename)" after doing so, but when I bring up the load game menu, the list is empty. Quicksaves do not work either.
I've already tried a few things listed in a few self-help threads on other sites but none have worked thus far.

Any help would make my day.

Well no help but I did manage to stumble across the script file that directs the file location of the save.

    uhhh fsgame.ltx
Was one-by-one shooting up the files into notepad++ and finally found the one I hoped to find.

    Replaced line 1 with
    $app_data_root$=true|false|C:\Users\Public\Documents\STALKER-SOC\
Which sets the destination to My Documents of my Windows 7 64bit. I think so anyway.
In which case instead of the Windows XP location of ProgramData or whatever the destination was, which doesn't exist/is apparently an "access denied" junction destination...

Anyway its fixed. Surprised they don't or haven't made an update for it. Hope this helps anyone else.
