Polys versus pixels for vehicle details

I'm working up a drive-able hovercraft tank for GMod that has quite a bit of panels. Is there any upper limit on how poly rich a vehicle model should/can be? I personally want to model the panels with cheap geometry removing any backside that isn't going to be seen to further keep the count low. I know however that for smoother performance most games try to use bump maps and texture shading and I maybe have the skill to try and photoshop that but I'd rather use the comfort of geometry. So get out your pry bars and shove me one way or the other.

    At 10k polys, you should take a step back and reconsider where you can cut back. There are some hard limits, there are ways to circumvent them, but 10k is usually more than enough for most anything.

    Thanks, I'm currently around 1,227 and roughly half way done with it if I count the turret. Is the ability to cross water determined by if you use jeep or airboat class or assigning a buoyancy to the 'material' of the vehicle.
