A mod that aims to put the Life back into Half-Life.

Hey guys! Been away from Gamebanana for way too long, but I never stopped mapping! :) The Core was recently voted in the top 100 upcoming mods of 2012 on ModDB (out of about 10,000) and I thought that was a good enough excuse to finally share it with you.

This is a Goldsource mod that has been under construction properly for around two years. It's currently in the home stretch and while I'm not willing to quote a release date, we're fairly determined to let it see 2013.

It's being developed by two people - Urbanebula and myself and features cameo voice acting from such e-celebs as Alex "Nerimon" Day, Vinny & Aaron (FND Films), Toby "Tobuscus" Turner, Criken, Ross Scott(Freeman's Mind) and Phillip "PlanetPhillip" Marlowe.

    The evolution videos are actually fairly simple. In the earliest iteration of the map I have a vague idea of how the geometry will look when I'm finished, so I set up in-game camera entities, initially just static (like in the tram hub) but then experimenting more with tracking cameras. After each compile I record a run through from the perspective of each camera using FRAPS and end up with several media bins full of video from the gradually growing versions of the map.

    The question I get asked most about them is whether I keep the old versions of the map and do all the recording at once, but no, I do it after every compile.



    Once the map is in a presentable state, I bring the footage into my editing software (in my case Premiere CS6 because it's what I use at work) and start lining up the footage so that the clips match as closely as possible. Once that's done I add a music track and use the Rolling Edit tool to move the cuts to the beat without knocking them out of sync with the camera track.

    Thanks, I never thought about camera entity in game. Now I'm going to change those lame timelapses of my map with this :P
