Sudden Lag in all PC Games

A Forum Thread for GameBanana

My computer seems to run at around 5 FPS in all games.

So, to keep it short, my computer has been lagging in every single game for a couple of days now. I have scanned it multiple times with malwarebytes anti malware (which found nothing), disassembled, cleaned, and put the entire PC back together, and have tried it on about 15 different games (ranging from Half Life, to Minecraft, to ARMA 2/BF3) and my frame rate hovers around 5. It started a couple of days ago, when I went to launch DayZ/ARMA 2. I didn't think anything about it, so I just rebooted and tried again. This didn't fix the problem, and I also noticed that Youtube videos will stop playing after about 10 seconds (although other videos - such as Netflix - works fine). I swapped out the graphics card with another one just to be sure, and the problem continued. I'll post my specs at the bottom of this post. So, if anybody has absolutely any idea what is going on, please post; even if you are just guessing. Nothing has recently been installed on my computer, and it runs just fine when I'm not playing a game. All of my drivers are up to date. Specs:
i3 540 @ 3.07ghz (OC 4.4ghz)
EVGA GeForce 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB (Also tried with a GTX 580 and a GTX 670, the problem continued)
4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3-2000
Windows 7 64-bit
ASUS P7P55 LX
If you need any more information, just let me know.

Drivers? Did you update them? Try uninstalling DayZ? I have no other idea what could be wrong.

Oh, happens to me. Give this a shot: In Windows 7, go to Computer Properties. Then to Advanced System Settings. Go to System Protection tab. Click configure and change the slider to a lower number, (I have mine at 10%). Then click the Delete button. This should delete all the saved settings and restore points from all the installs/Windows Updates and free up all the space in your HD. I know it slows down the Windows 7 systems of my lil brother and I if left unchecked. It went 70GB on my brother's HDD. It eats all the free space on my HDD, which is why it makes all the programs lag when they can't save any more data on your HDD

@Kasumi, I updated all my drivers prior to making this thread, forgot to mention that. Also the problem persist with all games, not specifically DayZ; although I have re-installed it since. @Shiban, thanks for the tip, but apparently the slider is already set to 2% (150~ mb) by default on my computer. I've got about 100 GB left on my main hdd (Windows partition), and 1.5 TB left on my secondary. @w4ssup, I actually have it on a High Performance mode, so I don't think that is the problem. Thanks for the help anyways.

Run a RAM memory test, if your RAM is good, then try putting your processor back to stock voltage and clock. If that doesn't help, try reinstalling operating system.

I see you already eliminated several options that could have been the culprit here: you swapped your GPU with different models to rule out a faulty/overheating card, your HDD has enough free space to prevent excessive swapping, you opened your PC and cleaned fans and made sure there are no loose cables, you scanned for viruses and found none. Let's see now; do you happen to have AVG antivirus installed on your PC? AVG is notorious for interfering with games (you need to set up something called gaming mode otherwise it will lag your games like hell). If you have another antivirus, it would be a good idea to check its settings to see if something similar exists. I would then advise you to do as agent said: run some memory tests to make sure your RAM is OK and not paging excessively to your HDD causing lag. Finally, your overclocked CPU might be acting up by overheating/cooling making your games unstable; it is a wise idea to restore it to stock clock and see if it helps. Reinstalling Windows would be the LAST resort, but I'm sure that something can be done before reaching this final solution Will2k

Yeah I seem to get that sometimes, its the you have had your computer on too long lag. I restart and it works normally again but that seems to not be the case here.

@agent, will2k: The RAM test resulted in no problems, so I reset the clock on my CPU. I've got an H100 so I didnt think the CPU was overheating (bios confirmed this) but I reset the clock anyways, and this seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks for the help.

Try doing a system restore to before you installed that game. Because you said that it all went to shit after you installed it, so it could be some dll issue. Also try to do a smart scan on your hdd, make sure it's not dying.

I actually had the game installed for close to a year (or a couple months before DayZ was around, anyways), I had just re-installed the game after things started messing up.

Glad to hear your problem is solved :) and you are able to have double and triple digit frame rate in your games :) A word of advice though: if you intend to overclock your CPU or GPU again, you need to rethink your cooling. Check your heat-sink to see if it's accumulating dust or clogging. Make sure the CPU fan is rotating freely on its axe and that there are no loose connectors. You may also consider upgrading your cooling system with bigger fans/heat-sinks or with water cooling. And lastly, do your overcloking (multiplier raising) in small increments and test after each increase using a CPU/GPU stress test software. Your CPU should remain stable for at least an hour of stress, to make sure the overclocking is stable. Keep in mind that overclocking will shorten the life span of the CPU/GPU and, even if you have a stable overclock now, any modification/addition to your PC (hardware or software) might break the balance and throw many errors in your system. I think you have decent CPU power to go by without overclocking.

@will2k Thanks for the help, but overclocking isn't new to me. I've had this current clock stable for about a year, and this is the first time I've ran into a problem with it. As far as cooling goes (heat sink wise) like I said before: I'm running an H100 which keeps the CPU at mid 50c under 100% load.this is why I didn't think that the clock was causing this problem considering that it has been stable for so long. Eaither way, I've reset the clock using the same settings as before, and it seems to be fine, so all is well; for now anyways : P
