I wanted to start modelling but i have a couple questions.

I wanted to start modelling since my friend wanted to start animating, and i figured we could work together and maybe create some general ideas and then maybe ( in a year or so ) create a skin. But right now i am utterly confused and would wish if somebody could link me a tutorial or send me a message via steam (user name on steam is SpaceBunneh same profile pic too), and could explain the world of modelling to me. I have something called Blender because i was told that it was a pretty good modelling program, but im wondering if there are any other (possibly better) modelling programs out there, or maybe more user friendly. If anybody could help me out. i know modelling isnt very easy, i know it takes time (perhaps even months at a time or even more). if you wish to help me i will be very grateful.

The best modelling program I know of is 3D Studio MAX.

When (and if) you get it, I'd suggest this tutorial. It shows most of the basics of modelling and it should get you on the right path.

Pick a 3D application and then watch and follow as many tutorials as you can get your hands on (even if it's not modeling something you'll use as a skin). It doesn't matter which app, especially when your friend is doing all the animations and compiling. Most apps provide getting started tutorials and videos, along with tons of documentation, and dedicated 3d communities. Use all of these resources, and remember to search first before you ask.

Your first few works will be awful, and there is no getting around that. You just need to keep on learning and improving which is up to you to sink the time into it. Advice from pros help, but it's up to you to take initiative and follow through with whatever you start.

no one ever mentions this program cause theyre all dumdums but if you want a 3ds like atmosphere and dont feel like paying 10000 dollars or illegally torrenting , get a program called GMAX, it's very very similar, and lots of 3ds max tutorials will work with it. plus its free.

Thanks but im using the first tutorial that was given to me. its around 5 hours(1 gig) of video and quite overwhelming as it is. but im understanding it as much as i can. the only thing now im so confused at is the use of extrude and how to make the curved edges and such.

I found this site very useful for beginner Max modelling. In modeling simple things like ashtrays, it teaches you all the extrudes and chamfers and stuff.
I would recommend starting here before you go on to the vid tut.

Thank you Dr. Haus, but i am getting a pretty good grip on the extrudes and such. i feel if i continue working on this baby rifle (AR7, lol) I will continue to get better, considering that even before that i didnt know anything i know now snice i started working on the rifle. Hopefully i can get a grip and do everything decently within a week or two and then start to try to learn more advanced things. Also, what do you do? DigitalAirplane! told me that you are a compiler, is that true?

The free Softimage Mod Tool is very capable and as powerful as the other main 3D apps such as 3DS Max and Blender, but it has one fatal flaw; a total lack of learning material about it. Most of the tutorials for it are extremely old, most of which are dead links. The only consistent and reliable source of information is the the documentation on the wiki, but you have to know what you are searching for to find help with problems, not friendly for a beginner who doesn't even know the basics. The others apps are more popular, and thus easier to find help and solutions to questions you will have.
