BF3 Future Mod Support?

A Forum Thread for Battlefield 3

Is it likely that DICE will support mod tools?

We all know that DICE is not supporting mods for BF3 on release.....at this current time. Do you think its likely that in a future DLC or update they will support mod tools to game dev's like crytek did? After all, they "claim' BF3 to be a leading platform for PC and are going to give the PC community first priority. There are a ton of people that really enjoyed such great mod tools that has supported mods all the way up to BF2142. And alot of mods are still being played today. Or is it totally just a lost cause? Discuss.

I really hope they release mod tools because this really is going to be an amazing game and mod tools would just be amazing, custom maps alone would make me happy

They said they wouldn't release Mod Tools because because FB 2.0 is "too advanced for the community". So yeah, they think we're too dumb to get their stuff working. They're not the first one that underestimates the community. Plus, would you buy DLC maps for CS:S or TF2? Well I wouldn't because there are a million maps out there to chose from and they're all free of charge, so that would hurt their business model.

When I spoke to the guys from EA a few months back at i43 they said they wouldn't support custom content as the game is going to be heavily DLC based. (Back then they wouldn't let us report on the customisation aspect until it had been officially announced.) So _if_ they are still planing on making it heavily DLC based then I personalty doubt you'll ever see comunity content in BF3. Not allowing custom content is probably partially to do with the origin anti-cheat system but I think more likely to be a marketing strategy. After all why let people create custom maps for free when you could charge people $10 every month or 2 for a new map pack? Now i'm not saying they wont release mod tools and allow people to build custom mods on their engine or using their content. I just doubt you'll see community content _IN_ BF3 as there's just too much money to be made by charging for DLC's with new content. I think it will be similar to the more recent call of duty games, where they offer new DLC's every couple of months.

Its a shame game publishers these days are so greedy and money hungry.....cant blame them for wanting to get every penny's worth out of their products. But come on...PC games were MENT to be modded. I guess say good by to the good old PC gaming days and expect all new games to be mod friendly.....

If they go the DLC route, I really hope it's the BC2 route. You know, the DLC you didn't feel was DLC. It was an update and some goodies since you bought the game.

EA needs to pay their oversized staff something other than peanuts. I've played 'unmoddable' games before and modded them to my liking heh. Custom maps may be out of reach but changing existing content will definitely happen whether they want it to or not. The community is pretty damn smart and will crack anything open for editing :D

As a developer, it's **always** a good idea to make your games modder friendly. Valve's games for instance, despite being years old and considerably behind-the-times in terms of gameplay and features, are still being heavily modified, I think because it's so relatively easy. In fact, CS, DOD and others started out as mods! Modding takes a successful game and extends its lifetime for **years** because of the modding community. I've seen it many times.

My best memories of BF1942 were Interstate 82 & Galactic conquest; fine mods that were near enough total conversions. It's just a straight dick move if they are never going to have some proper mod support. I just want a map with nothing but 2 runways and 64 jets..

You don't need mod tools handed to you by the developers to change content. Many existing ways to do that already.

As long as DICE support the game by providing fixes and updates now and then,my care cup for modding tools is empty.Mod tools were never eye catching to me.
