This is a question that I've always wanted to ask other people: what are your thoughts on submissions based on content from and inspired by another game? An example is the Call of Duty related Counter-Strike: Source submissions.
While I could get a lot of negative feedback from this thread, I'd like to know what's the point in this; because I don't see how it enhances the game at all.
The look-alike animations, the silencer iron-sight trick, and outside of Gamebanana there's MW2 models that have been ported for CSS. In my opinion, if you're going to customize your game based on another, then why not just play the original instead?
It's understandable that people do this for being die hard fans, but in the end what's the point?
That's where you come in; I'd like you to tell me in your eyes what makes these submissions shine beside the older, submissions that are as great in quality. If you've released a submission based on what I said, then what motivated you to do so besides the novelty?
Somethings are just too cool to not want, like the Crysis suit.
As for anything else. I see two reasons for this. For one, you have the fact that the developer generally made a high quality release with fantastic animations/sounds/and model. Like me, I dislike pretty much every UMP in the CS:S section; but I would love to have MW2's UMP since it was so fluid and good looking.
And then you have that people are simply looking for a project, what better project than to make a total conversion for another game? That's at least 2 weeks in the hands of someone skilled ate up if they just port, multiple weeks if they recreate everything from scratch.
Well, maybe you love the art direction/art style of one game but simply dislike the other games gameplay? Plus those original games might be a great exercise in trying to train doing animations from a reference, as some developers might request from you later.
This has probably died, but thanks for the responses. I can see where everyone's going, and they are valid points.

Only the models, and possibly the maps yeah; but you can't really match the gameplay unless you decide to create a new modification.
