Release Disclaimer

This is a Disclaimer for the public release of this document. The details below are as accurate as possible, however sections have been removed for storyline purposes and the faction write-ups provided have also had significant cuts to remove details of story twists. In addition some information is out of date due to technical issues on FPSB preventing access to updated concepts but most of this is minor. In each faction section there has been a short summary written (to stop it reaching 62 pages as it was before) however this is just a quick summary and the introduction and content of the full write-ups is much more accurate. As always, information provided below is subject to change during development.

Executive Summary

Create a highly customizable mod for the FPSB community. Content shall be modular in design so as to allow new content to exist without overwriting original files. The expandable nature of the mod should appeal to the customization community at fpsbanana.com as they will be allowed to create unique additions to a game rather than replace what’s already been released. MegaMod will be a merger between the First Person Shooter genre with many Role Playing Game features to help encourage longer playtimes/game population. Source files (.max, .obj, .psd, forum posts on story dev, etc.) for all content shall be provided to further help both starting and experienced developers become familiar with how the mod works top to bottom and expand the MegaMod game universe. This will also help other mod’s understand where the potential pitfalls of game development lie. There is neither definite start nor end to this game; it will be ever expanding from user generated content and from developer content/support so that gamers can enjoy the mod in the long term rather than as a flavour of the week and move onto the next best thing. Given the size of the FPSBanana.com community this is not an outlandish goal and we should be able to continue expanding onto the world we’ve created. Features and systems detailed below are subject to changes as the needs of the community change; this is a mod designed for the community therefore their needs will dictate our focus and direction. MegaMod will be using the UDK platform and therefore will have no extra game requirements common with Source engine mods.

Section I: Game Overview

Original Game Story Proposal

(Semp)
Our Visitors gave neither warning nor reasoning. They simply acted. In one day their fleet swept over the entire planet's surface, their vessels shape permanently ingrained into the collective human psyche. We feared them that day in much the same way we fear everything we don't know or understand. Most of us envisioned the typical idea of an alien invasion - with pillaging, destruction, death and the enslavement of humanity - yet we were surprised; those who didn't hide in their homes and basements could admire the alien fleet from outside their doorstep throughout the entire ordeal without incident. Many militarized nations reacted and struck out at the ships out of fear and mistrust; however, nothing happened, the ships continued on their path without retaliating and aside from the collateral damage to local structures/populations one would think nothing had happened at all. The next day they were gone from the skies; the next week, reports of missing persons began flooding in; the next month, a sad trend appeared in the nature of the apparent kidnappings... It seemed like all examples of the good side of the human spirit were gone. Those who had fought to save humanity from itself had been deemed too precious, too valuable, and too rare to be lost to our violent human nature - at least that's what it seems like. After all, Human History, past, present and foreseeable future points toward continued suffering and cruelty; maybe they saved those people from their eventual fate, or maybe they’ve been subjugated to a far worse fate than the rest of humanity that's been left behind in this shattered world. There was lots of commotion around the world in the months following the ships departure, most feared a return, and some believe they never left but are still watching, waiting perhaps. It wasn’t apparent at first what their purpose was when they filled our skies on that first day, but eventually we noticed the changes: birthrates began rising throughout the world and the sheer number born with defects left doctors scrambling for a cause and a cure. Eventually a cause was found, it seems the Visitors purpose that day was for more than just sightseeing, but rather to release a virus into the world’s ecosystem that has increased the rate of mutation within our cells with each new generation. We had done a good job ourselves in destabilizing the environment before that day, but our visitors had made much more of an impact with little effort in comparison to our efforts. Our world is now changing more and more each generation - species evolve, regress, die off and prosper due to this virus - for better or worse it still leaves us in dangerous times. Within a year most of what we used to think of as order and law had deteriorated, few civil liberties remain in the world. The details of this downfall are interesting, but irrelevant, suffice to say that without strength, power and numbers nations cannot exist anymore and so most fell. Our Visitors pushed the world over the edge but we know from history that our fellow man, not nature or fate, is still the root of destruction; However, Humanity's changed as you now know, Apollyon made sure of that...

3.1 – Revised Story Concept

The world was thrown into chaos during the initial outbreak of the apollyon virus, its reach extended throughout most of the globe and forced many nations to work together to combat its affects. The IMMSI was created in an effort to find a cure both for the population and local animal and plant life. The IMMSI still exist years later and have strayed little from their original goal and actually made some headway; no outright cure but something to alleviate the affects of the virus. The most devastating results were seen in its secondary effects. The culminations of these were the Great World Famine which defined a 10 year period of dwindling food stocks and continuously failing harvests. While the IMMSI had limited success with the virus, others had different ideas on how to safeguard themselves from this new threat. The Atlantic Research and Infrastructure Association began a bold project to create self sustainable contained cities in which major populations could survive. While before such a project would have been considered outlandish and freedom pervading; with the continuing problems in the world a trial (known as Project Lockdown) was performed in America that proved extremely successful for all parties. Further cities were built from the ground up dropping the inefficiencies of city growth and dispersion and opting towards clearly planned designs and controlled population. Despite criticism of a seemingly totalitarian system the occupants and US investigators both found freedom, safety and none of the lawlessness seen outside the walls. The cities using advanced technologies of the science firm were nearly completely self sufficient. ARIA did work with the IMMSI to create their own solution to the virus – which the IMMSI received only limited supplies of initially – that had some side affects which made their populations weak but still liveable. These fortified cities are scattered throughout the world and continue to work and advance in technology without fear of war or famine unlike the rest of the world. These safe havens are among the last productive aspects of the human race, the rest have resorted to war and subterfuge to be able to get what they want. With supply lines later built, the treatment (known as Tamefyllon) was then produced in much greater levels with the ARIA cities requirements being of the utmost priority for distribution before other locations were stocked. The IMSSI also collaborated with the ARIA and the growing Middle Eastern alliance - known by the media as the MET - to form a vaccine which could be used on crop fields. With this solution the World Famine was finally brought to an end; in the process empowering the MET and the IMSSI far beyond its original intended reach. In the troubles of a dissenting population and the resulting coups of several militaries, the European Union turned to the proven mercenary forces of the UGDT to fill the gap. The UGDT ingrained itself over later years into the EU which would prove one of the few groups capable of weathering the changing world. After the defeat of Russia in an inevitable war with China, the Russian general Anhastas Khabatov worked with both occupying forces and a guerrilla force to retake the nation and begin a new assault on China. To this day the war with China continues, Khabatov has since rebuilt much of his newly christened Eurasian Empire by conquering previous buffer states and constructing infrastructure across the nation. With landmark humanitarian efforts he earned the devotion of his people and - since the mysterious fall of America - has created one of the most powerful nations on the planet. The world isn’t a pretty place...it may have survived and continued as the ARIA cities do, but shortly after the outbreak of the apollyon virus, alien ships appeared in high orbit before settling down into a slightly lower one. Whatever the ships were comprised of it disrupted all existing communication with orbiting satellites and space stations – there was no evidence of a shuttle attempting to return from the ISS at any point during the first few weeks, it’s unknown whatever became the astronauts onboard. With global communications down throughout the globe, many smaller nations took this opportunity to strike out against old enemies or to expand their borders to increase their empires/wealth without fear of interference by the larger peacekeeping nations. Many eastern countries returned to their old ways of governing to retain control of their populations during the ensuing riots and panic brought on first by the apollyon and then intensified by the appearance of alien ships in orbit. Out of the confusion of the Arrival rose the Order of Astraeos. Headed by Didact Howard, the religion grew in power and now stands as one of the most influential religions on the planet - commanding the worship of several million people across 3 continents. A recent development however is the Brotherhood Fraternitas, an underground movement acting directly against the Order; these actions are reciprocated violently in nations where the Order holds greater strength. Many nations simply fell apart due to weak military forces and many coup d'états from local militia/military leaders; others grew stronger and eventually absorbed these warring/failing/abandoned territories into their population. A good deal of the world was left to their own devices, many don’t even know under which country’s border they fall in on any given day nor do they care. All of these aimless people comprise the rubble, a term that accurately describes many of the scattered populations caught in the middle of the endless warzones. Nomadic clans developed quickly with families moving together form place to place seeking shelter, food and a life of their own. Currently the world has found a balance amongst all the violence; new major powers have surfaced, old ones reborn, and an ever increasing religious following which brought about a world stability even during the continuing wars. Against all odds the world didn’t tear itself apart, a moderate amount of peace can be found if you know where to look.

Thanks for reading through the first in a series of threads where we will be releasing bits of the mods collected works every other week, if you have comments/suggestions/critiques about the above work then please let us know! We'd love to hear what you guys have to say and there are plenty of us around to answer questions you may have or fix problems you've spotted. The next release will include a full work-up about one of the factions mentioned in this release and then more game features/functions in the release after that :D

Middle Eastern Tacos. Wait....no, thats just by belly talking. MET = Middle Eastern Trading Group. Fairly plain name, nothing too extravagant there. EDIT: while I'm at it, since we've pretty much used acronyms etc where-ever possible to save on typing.... IMMSI = International Medical Supply and Support Initiative MET = Middle Eastern Trading Group UGDT = Union Global Defense Technologies ARIA = Atlantic Research and Infrastructure Association others were not mentioned in the blurb so that'll wait for later releases :P

tbh, ive never read any of the mega mod threads in their entirety, but i read this and was blown away. that is a practically professional sounding story. i may not be the best in the world at finding flaws right away, but this thread makes me want to play this the moment it is released along with HL2:EP3

This is a rather brief overview of the world we've designed, the faction write-ups will show quite a bit more depth in areas - heavily censored I'm afraid. A few have been given several revisions to polish them to a great casual read and resulted in a word count of 2,250+ sometimes.

The write-ups were done by the guys in the concept department. Others and myself go through afterwords and do a clean-up - improve grammar, sentence structure and just general English since it`s not everyones first language around here.

@Rye We've been discussing the storyline for a long time. For the last year we've been chugging along non-stop in the Concept department, its why losing the studio forums was such a blow to us, it left us using WIPs to iron details which isn't ideal. Since around April (I think?) I've been writing writeups and a timeline and trying to get details synced across them all so they match up, this helped as I would write down everything I could think of on the subject (a faction) as we had discussed. We could then discuss it in threads (and later WIPs) and revise it. At the time of writing there are 12 Private writeups and 9 Public writeups and I'm working on a 10th which will be fully public (nothing storyline related). The latest update has the shortest faction writeup as 1,522 words and longest as 4,812 with the average about 3800. All private means is its been culled of anything that may reference storylines which aren't present at the outset, nothing sinister :P But yeah the Concept department exists for the purpose of creating concept art for the game, and for making the storyline.

Holy shit, I didn't even know that the megamod was still being developed. Shows how active I am. The storyline isn't that bad, but I would imagine that people would want it to be tweaked and some parts changed eventually. Right now I like the sound of it, though.
