Just wondering, you guys, why did you spend so much more for the hardware when you can load the latest Apple OS onto any hardware? Surely it cannot be for the looks alone that you'd spend hundreds more on?

At the end of the day its the brand people want. Apple try to sell a lifestyle and they make out Macs as the hip thing.
Thing is a Mac user implies they know little about computers since they bought an inferior product for more (don't deny it, you have to bootcamp for tons of stuff and that takes hard drive space and you still are limited to inferior hardware and a locked in system) money.
However people who know about computers complicate it when they get disposable income by deciding the looks are worth the price and so simply bootcamp into Windows for all their stuff but keep the Mac looks.

Personally I'd say: I'd love to own a Mac, but I'd never buy one (a good Mac, like top of the range so it'll about match my 3 year old laptop)

A few months back my family bought a Mac Book (not pro) and that was my first experience with a mac. A couple weeks ago I convinced my parents to get my sister a new iMac since I love macs now. Don't get me wrong. I'm in no way a Apple fan boy. My first Apple product was the O.G. iPhone on release date and then 2 years later the 3gs. (Now i have a Google Nexus One) But I <3 Macs and how easy they are. Plus you can run Windows (with a little bit more money for the software to do it).

    I bought a MacBook Pro 17" at 2250 euro's last week.
I needed a Mac for my study since they work with mac's.
Everyone has a 13" MacBook Pro except for me. I'm using an Acer Aspire 18.4" now since I still haven't got my MacBook Pro.
And for people saying why would you buy it.
I find it worth because it has excellent batterylife. Beautifull screen and Panic Coda is fucking sweet.

I had to buy one for when I went to college for graphic design and advertisement. I asked the teacher why buy a mac when i can do the same thing I need it for on a regular laptop. This was his response.

"It makes you look like a professional"

There are some fonts on the Mac that aren't avaible in Windows and they handle fonts better.
Besides that only the Dell XPS 16 RGBLED has a better colour range than a MacBook Pro.

    Half right Sarkdog.

Macs anti-alias their fonts more making them prettier, this is only on the system fonts but its enough to make them look comparitively softer.

However there's little difference in font availability

I don't know how anyone could like a Mac over PC because of fonts, my fonts on Mac look like absolute crap.

They are either blurry or jagged as can be.

PC definitely wins the font race, unless I just have something set up wrong.

Actually you don't buy Macs for Photoshop. Some people claim the workflow in better but others point out the lack of right click screws it a lot so that's personal preference and is a moot point.

However on Windows you can get Photoshop in 64 bit, not an option on Mac and PS on Windows can also tap into hardware acceleration and a lot of plugins and scripts which aren't available on Windows.

The font thing is relative. Macs brought in font improvement first and Microsoft responded with Clearfonting in later Windows editions. Short answer: Mac > XP fonts Vista & 7 > Mac

Exhibit A: The person who chooses a device that is more expensive for inferior functionality and power

Why specifically Photoshop? It doesn't function with EXR files and a bunch of other formats so wouldn't it be more appropriate to say basic web browsing (since that's something it does equally to Windows.

Then again IE9 is faster than Chrome (not the nightlies) on basic render so there's something on browsing OSX doesn't have.
On a side note I'm very excited for 9, Chrome will probably outstrip it when it gets hardware acceleration but its still encouraging to see MS back in the browser war

Well, I haven't bought a Mac, but I have used Mac OS X. Even though I know the models of my chipsets, it still took a while to find the right drivers when installing. Still, once it was up, it worked just as it should. I imagine if I had bought it with Mac OS X preinstalled then there wouldn't have been a single issue.

Still, it felt awkward coming from Ubuntu. The interface certainly is simple, but I really prefer the old style of window lists like KDE has (with two dimensions in particular). On the other hand, the hardware acceleration made things smoother than other OSs. That isn't to say others can't do it, but the different Linux window managers, for example, can cause tearing in video when compositing is on so I tend to leave it off. Still, they're all better than XP's window manager.

All in all, I personally like it and I can attest to it being superior software as a computer scientist, but I can't see myself buying a Mac unless it's a Mac Mini just to get some more experience with it (for jobs). That said, half of my friends use Macs, as do all of the computer science professors at the university, and the library at the university is 75% Macs, and Mac OS X is actually more popular on-campus, so yeah.... I'm one of the few that doesn't use it on a regular basis around here.

But somehow I can't see you, Kat_Fish, liking it. I don't know why...

Not legally though, you know what happened to Psystar. It's also not compatible with all hardware.

Running it on non-apple hardware is annoying.
Some hardware isn't supported and it's just a total waste of time.
When you get a Mac you can immidietly start using.

Also, the MacBook Pro 17" is the best desktop replacement on NotebookCheck.
Best craftmanship because of it's unibody.
It's overall a notebook I would prefer over any other laptop.
I don't know of any other 17" notebook with good quality exterior and a 1920x1200 display.
And the battery life is just way better than any windows notebook.
Even with it's i5 cpu and GT330 gpu (Not saying it has better performance than windows notebooks with same hardware).

Btw, the iMac is definitly not overpriced. Same goes for the Mac Pro.
Only the notebooks and the Mac mini are overpriced.

Alienware M17x? Lovely outside, better components and £400 cheaper (you can't go any lower than the default gpu which is superior)

Honestly I'd prefer a Windows laptop. What's the point in having a powerful Mac if you can't do anything with it apart from browse? With a windows laptop you can do everything better.

The alienware is huge compared to the macbook pro 17".
It's fucking thick and not portable. The battery doesn't last long. I don't want to use that on my lap.
And to be honest, it doesn't look so good.
And how can you do nothing with it apart from browse?
You have a lot of apps. And I can run Windows 7 on it and it will last longer than the Alienware in terms of battery life.

Well you can do Photoshop sort of. You can't do 3d. You can do documents but that's casual use which is what I put browse under.

I own an M15x (the older generation) and I can say the newer one is even sleeker, I've set it down alongside a Macbook and while sure its a little bigger its not a problem. The battery life is fine, I get a good 5hours usage on balanced, 3 on high performance

It is very portable, decent battery life etc.
Thing is everything you can do on the Macbook can be also done on a netbook for £200. Apart from photoshop functionality it matches up equally.

So are you admitting that you would sacrifice far superior power for the "looks" of the Macbook.

At the end of the day that's what confuses me about the Macbooks. Their only use is casual operation and yet they demand the prices of high end hardware.

Yes, I sacrificed performance for the looks and battery life of the Macbook Pro and because I am required to get a Macbook/Macbook Pro.

There are enough windows laptops I do like.
And my current notebook is an Acer. I like it a lot.
    I paid 1000E for a 2GHZ core 2 duo and a 9700M GT. It's 18.4" and not portable.
But I only use it at home because of it's size.

What the fuck do you mean, not portable? Every laptop is portable. :/
If you only use it at home you wasted money on it's ability to be portable.

At 18.4", I wouldn't say so. My 15" laptop barely fits in my backpack and its weight is equal to everything else in my backpack combined. There's no way I could carry something even 17". All the more reason to get a nice 10" tablet. :3 (Notion Ink Adam, anyone?)

Why pay 10 times (yeah I know I am overreacting) for the same thing only with a "cooler" look.. I'd rather build my own computer and dual-boot Win7 and Ubuntu (which is what I am doing on my laptop)..

The problem is that most people dosen't know that Linux (Ubuntu, Debian etc.) has become A LOOOT more user-friendly over the years. you don't need to be rocket scientist anymore to understand it :P Only need Autodesk, Adobe and VALVe to compile their products for linux and I myself will NEVER touch anything else in the rest of my life.

It seems that Valve has hired some Linux personnel, actually. Who knows.
