Hey, I need help, just got a new computer and.. I'm getting lag spikes every couple of seconds, only when I play cod:mw2. It's fine running other games, such as l4d2. My system is: windows xp core i7 860 @ 2.80 ghz (8 cpus) gigabyte p55-ud5 4gb ddr3 2000 ram ATI radeon HD 5850 I've tried reducing the graphics from the highest possible to the lowest, and yet still get the same results. The spikes tend to disappear immediately after fiddling (changing anything) with the graphic settings, but then come back after a round or so. I've checked my wireless connection, and it's being received as "excellent", yet still causes the same spikes. Oh and some extra info, it was working fine for the first night I played. Suggestions? Thanks in advance. Really appreciated.

First of all, are you talking about in Multiplayer or Singleplayer or both and is it the same "type" of lag spikes in each if it does it in both?

It seems like it's only Multiplayer.

I turned them both off and the result from one game was a lot less spiking, but still random periods where it would still occur.

With that rig you shouldn't have to turn anything down, do you have ALL the latest drivers?

Try disabling all firewall/anti-virus applications. MW2 is a real bitch when it comes to those.

Yeah, I went to the ATI website and got all the drivers when trying to solve it myself.
I don't have any anti-virus atm on the new computer. Windows firewall is off.
Initially I copied it from an external hard drive from my other computer (The entire steam folder).

That could cause the problem, try uninstalling then installing it directly onto the computer, it could be missing files/registry entries.

I uninstalled it via "Delete local content" on steam then installed in using the cd and following the on-screen prompts, yet I still get the same problem :(

Do you have the lagometer enabled? Turn it on if you don't and post what happens to it when you get the lag spikes.
