Rusty Antguard, needs help

Need help for further customization of my current skin

I'm working on this new skin for the Antguard, namely the Rusty Antlion Guard. I'm more or less done with the actual skinning process, but I was still looking for a last touch to add. Since it's meant to be a metal guard I was hoping to change its skin into metal, so I went looking among the vmt's to find the correct line to change. I thought I found it but I was wrong. (surfaceprop "metal" doesn't work) After that I went looking in the scripts, to see if that changes the overlay of the model. I tried different settings: base metal.base, base solidmetal, armoredflesh etc... Now my question is; can you replace the skin of the antguard to make it metal, so that for example when you shoot it, it's as if you're shooting a metal wall? And where should I look, scripts or vmt? If it's not possible, can someone redirect me to a tutorial on how to change the alienblood into petrol? Thanks in advance

    The material type is defined in the model itself for the antlion guard so you'll need to compile a new one to change it. Lucky for you the complete source files for it are available in your "sourcesdk_content\hl2\modelsrc\Antlion_Guard" folder. Open the .qc file and you should see this line: $surfaceprop "alienflesh" just change that to 'metal' and your good to go. If you don't know how to compile models or never done it before just hit the blue quote button on my post and let me know, would take all of 5 seconds to compile and send it your way if absolutely needed.

    Thanks for the reply. I found the .qc file easily, and tried to change it with notepad, which failed miserably. So if it's possible for you to fix that file, I'd be grateful. I've never compiled a model in my life, so I wouldn't know where to start.

    Both me and a friend tried this on hl2, but unfortunately it didn't work, when shot, the guard still shows alien wounds, and there are no sparks on shooting it. We both extracted the files correctly. I hope you have another idea, else I'll just release the skin w/o extra's.

    Ah, your right, it was doubly defined in both the normal qc and the included hitbox one. Fixed up & tested ingame so he's now all sparky. Re-download from the same link. Blood decals you may want to consider skinning - the ones displayed on the ground etc, it will show metal wounds on the guard itself though.

    Thank you very much Lost, the metal is sparking like never before. EDIT: I found the decals, which should I change, blood1-8, or the bloodstains? At the end there's also a Yblood1-6.. REDIT: ok it's the Yblood

    Give a browse through the sourcematerials.gcf, should be somewhere in there. I can't atm as I've switched over to the laptop and haven't transferred everything over yet. Or open hammer and use the texture browser to search for it.

    So I found the decals, which were shown as YBlood from 1 to 6, and skinned them all. I also edited the vmt to make them glow ingame. But now I tested it and they didn't change. After that I launched hammer, to find the Yblood decals the way I skinned them. Other than the Yblood there are no blood decals that could be used by the antguard, since they're only for humans and zombies. So if it's possible to find how to make those decals show in game, or if the Yblood set is the wrong one, which one is the correct?

    You could try the console command "mat_texture_list" in-game to list current textures used in the current frame. Alternatively mat_texture_list_all to list everything loaded at that moment. Aside from that I can't be of much more help till later tonight when I get back home.

    Ok, so when I tried that, the first time it gave me the decals/blood and decals/bloodstain So I changed the skin of some of those Blood decals, and when I booted up hl2 again, went to the antguard, shot him a couple of times, I listed all the textures again, but there was no blood decal on the list ( the decals that showed up on the ground were still the default ones ) Now I have no idea where to get those decals from, could you help me?

    Best bet: HL2/Materials/Decals/Antlion/shot*.vtf there's also an alienflesh folder but it looks like leftovers from HL1.

    Well, those decals were actually visible in game, but only if I shot regular antlions, and only on the ants themselves. I think we tried every possible decal, so unless you have a last resource, I'll be enjoying my skin furthermore until I decide to give it a go on fpsb.
