Intro
For those who do not know, it's that time of year for all 16 year olds in the United Kingdom to under go exams.
These exams would have been studied for over 2 years, and the weeks ahead are pivotal to their futures - the GCSE's are what people put on their CV's and therefore mean that the exams we are facing now determine not only our grades - but our entire future.
For more info regarding the exams, take a look at this link.
Choices
In year nine - aged 13-14, teenagers pick the subjects they wish to take forward.
My personal choices were:
Food Sciences
History
French
ICT
As well as this, the core subjects are studied as well (English, Maths, Sciences)
Why make this thread dumbfuck?
The point of this thread is to start a discussion for people my age/or older younger revolving around GCSE's a place where people can discuss exams and other aspects. This thread comes on the day I leave compulsory education however, and so it should be happy!
Useful Resources
There are many sites which can help you revise for the exams, I'll list some of the ones which have been beneficial to me.
I like this site for facts, but gets a little dull and boring.
I will update this list when you give me more links!Summary
I would love your guys input, lets get a discussion going, give me your favourite revision sites, techniques and methods - contribute by any means necessary!
Note to moderators: posts you may deem "off-topic" would you refrain from trashing/witholding unless they truly are. I'm trying to start a dsicussion which will no doubt trail off into different stories.
Just started doing my GSCE's. Just finsished my art exam today, it was 10 hours spread over two days :P
Here are the exams I'm doing over the next month or so
Biology, Physics, Chemistry (triple)
English (Lit and Lang)
ICT
R.S
Spanish
Maths
Additional Maths
History
Art (DONE IT YAY)

I don't think I've got multiple choise in mine D: I'm in nearly the top set for most stuff :P
But I will be revising. If I can keep off here.
I was in the second top set and had multiple choice D: have you done any ISA's yet?

All of you taking it this year have nothing to worry about.

I got a few GCSE's this year but my main GCSE's are next year.
So your Y10? I remember doing the mother-fucking modules. It's like filling in a lottery card. (They are piss easy)
Im in yr 10 and ive already done the first ones, b1b and c1b ages ago, i got 100% in both of those :p, now ive got my end of years and the final modules c1a, c1b, b1b, p1b and an isa.
Despite my school being 76th best in the country (or something like that) im only allowed to take 3 gcses of my choice so i got.
history
geography
latin
im doin IT outside of school and its piss easy but i got asked a question on how to attach a image in an email as a question: simple eh?
not really, i had to take a picture of me turning the computer on and take screenies of each step, and say, take picture, turn comp on, obtain picture to comp through wired connection eg usb or card reader etc...
really stupid.
History
Geography
German
Graphics (D.T)
I'm predicted pretty much straight A*s, got 5 A*s, 4 A's and a B in mock exams in january, so it's looking pretty good, I just need to revise loads, I haven't started yet :[
Btw is anyone doing iGcse's?? our school takes them and they are supposedly harder than regular gcses :/

Was that CLAIT? We did that at my school and I wanted to take a shit on the papers it was so ridiculously easy.
BBC Bitesize is pretty shit tbh. It only covers the basics
I'm doing:
French (hoping for B)
Class Civ(hoping for B)
Music (hoping for A/A*)
Maths (hoping for B)
Sciences (hoping for a B in all, probably only c in physics =P)
English (hoping for an A, but i might mess up and get a B!)
DT (hoping for a C/B)
If an A*=4 points, A=3 ect, i need to get 16 points to go where i want

You put too much emphasis on GCSEs. A-Levels are much more important, and after that a good university degree is even MORE influencial in determining your future. GCSEs don't mean diddly-squat if you have poor A-level results, considering that is what determines your future for further education.
GCSEs are nothing when you get to where I am now, 1 month away from finishing university.
Try spending 3 months making a film and then writing 10,000 words about it.
Welcome to my world.
(Mind you I got all A's at GCSE so by no means should you be complacent about them.)

I've been told this by another person too, but I think qualifications come as a package anyway - good a levels combined with good GCSE's will get you further than good a levels alone.

Mm you're not wrong mate, all of the exams you undertake from GCSEs onwards are INTEGRAL to your future. However, GCSEs are clearly not as important as your university degree. If you don't get the grades you want at GCSE it certainly doesn't mean you can't get a job.
If you get good grades in GCSEs then you will be given the opportunity to undertake the A-Levels that you are good at. If you do poorly in your GCSEs then you will not be given this chance, obviously.
Don't get me wrong, GCSEs are very important, and very stressful - believe me, I've been through it all. But just don't get caught up on it.
With a little bit of revision you will do well. I didn't do huge amounts of revision and I did very well. It may surprise you but they mark GCSEs quite leniently!
Be prepared for the future: It gets a LOT harder.

100% corectoo. I finished my GCSE's last year doing A/S levels this year, and OMG they are so hard, The works harder, which you would expect, but the worst thing is the grade boundries, at GCSE say you get 50% of the paper correct, thats a B? maybe even an A? . A-level, 50% correct you scrape a D,
And unless your planning on going to Oxbridge or want to study medicine at uni, then GCSE's do matter. Otherwise, there pretty much your entrance to 6th form, and thats about it, dont worry too much about them.
Leave the worrying till later on in life ;P
Sounds like a pain. I suppose the UK is using a modified teaching system. I grew up with teh French style teaching system in romania. It didn't involve tests like this, but you basically had to get a firm grasp on what you want to do for your senior year in school.
That system was also pretty hard, for example a B there would seem like it's a C-. But yes in college you HAD to start buffing and polishing your career.
In the U.S. there is no such test, there is a standardized test, but that means close to nothing personally, but the colleges look at those scores to put you in the base classes. You can also pick your major in college after your freshman year, although it's better to know before hand, but nor required.
My advice is;
If you test well, make sure you are prepared well enough, so no cramming at the last minute. And just relax the day before so you don't get worked up.
If you don't test well, study at least two weeks prior to it, and avoid a lot of stress. Also manage your time.
Other than that, power to you.

Did mine last year, in all fairness it was amazingly easier than everyone expected and we later realized that all the teachers hyped it up for no real reason at all :)
Anyway good luck guys :D
I did my GCSEs 2 years ago and it has to be said that your teachers will make them out to be a) harder than they actually are and b) more important than they actually are. This isn't exactly pointless as it makes you actually work for them but then again a person of average intelligence can do reasonably well with little to no work. Unless, as Samm said, you want to go to an Oxbridge university or study medicine (obviously both highly competitive) then your GCSEs are of little or no consequence to your life other than granting entry to college to then go on and do whatever. What you CANNOT do however is be complacent when you get to A-Level. I found my GCSEs to be extremely easy and I did very little work in year 10 and 11 and still came out with far better grades than I was ever going to need to get into college. If this happens to you, and bare in mind I'm speaking from experience here, don't keep this attitude in college. In my first year of college, I decided to keep my strategy of do no work, get the grades. This will not work at A-Level (and presumably not degree but I'm not there yet). I made this mistake and as a result I'm retaking my first year of college, it's not exactly a complete disaster, I'm doing far better than I ever would have done last year but it pains me to see people falling into the same mistake as I did.
Sure, work hard for your GCSEs but whatever you do in high school, make sure you work your ass off for A-Level or you will screw yourself over.
Oh and one last piece of info for you all:
You may already know this, but the grades you get in your mock GCSEs will act as 2 grades below your predicted results. The same applies for A-Levels.
I recieved a bunch of Cs in my GCSE mocks (over 5 years ago I think?) and recieved all As. In A-Levels my AS results were 3 Cs, and I came out with 3 As which inevitably allowed me to go to university.
However, don't let this fool you. Put the work in now and it will be worth it when results day comes around.
Who knows, maybe in a few years time you will all be in my position, about to embark on a Masters degree at university - honestly you wouldn't believe how difficult it is.
GCSEs are a cake-walk compared to what I do now!
P.S. this is a little early for you GCSE-takers but 1st year at university is NOT what it's hyped up to be. 90% of students hate first year and love 2nd/3rd year. This is a fact.
Just a friendly warning.
Doing my GCSE O next year.
Doing:
English
Chinese
E maths
A maths
English Literature(Elective)
