Crazy Monitor/Graphics Card Shit

A Forum Thread for GameBanana

What is going, the fuck, on!?

I've been meaning to make this thread for a while, but always forgot to print screen. Sometimes when I boot up my screen will go all fucked up on me. Trippy-ish. I found a temporary fix but it will work for about 3 days. Setting my refresh rate again. My monitor has 60Hz or 75Hz refresh rates available and swapping between solves it for a bit. I have a HD4850 and a about 3 months ago I've been getting these problems.
Things I've tried; Uninstalling my Graphics drivers and re-installing. Forcing refresh rates (only rates that are supported) Cleaning my case Increasing fan speed to cool the card down.
Anyone know what I can do to fix this, or seen this before? I'm not using Windows 7 by the way I'm also using a DVI to VGA adapter (VGA monitor connecting into a DVI converter)

Forcing refresh rates above what your monitors limit will only fuck your screen up..

Forcing a supported refresh rate will do nothing of the sort. Should have mentioned I didn't force anything but default or supported, my bad.

I have a HD4850 as well. The person I bought it off of on Ebay overheated it, and everyone once and a while, while playing crysis or BF2, everything will be covered in tiny red or green dots and artifacts. It looks cool, but obviously isn't normal. It seems to be a heat problem.

yeah mines running 37C, what i was getting at, maybe you gamed and pushed it too far and it got a little too hot? I dont have the Stock fan, it ran at like 60C idle and 90C under load. EDIT: The weird thing is that screenshots actually capture it, usually when i have artifact problems like that If i screenshot them they look normal to everyone else, but it still shows up on my screen. Software problem rather than hardware?

Does this issue occur in the BIOS screen?

Try it. Seeing as how your BIOS works off of your onboard VGA. If the problem still occurs it most likey is the monitor acting up, and if not it's something else. Trial and error.

Only thing is. I'm not sure when it's going to happen again.

If you can take a picture of it it's not the monitor. The GPU/video card/whatever you have is definitely overheating and/or damaged.

I tried re-installing again, and also following some instructions I found online, and it seems to be ok. I'll see what happens over the next few days, as I don't have the funds to fork out for a new card.

Is it something you can just increase the fan speed on? That's always a cheap option.

I'm using ATi Overdrive, RivaTuner didn't like my card, and I set the fan speed to 70% a couple days ago.

Had a problem like this, turned out to be a registry-related problem. DL and run CCleaner (make sure you save a backup of ur current reg, it'll ask u to when u scan).
