Connecting a SCSI Drive to a Desktop PC

A Forum Thread for GameBanana

Help please.

Basically I acquired 2 SCSI drives from an old server we had and I'm wondering how to connect them up to my PC. I understand these are special server hard drive thingies and I also hear the performance on them is good. So, I was wondering, if the PC buffs could help me with this situation. Tell me if you need any more information.

......if you don't have a scsi port on your motherboard (which I highly doubt that you do) you would have to get a controller card for it. And the price/benefit ratio would be better if oyu just bought on of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136296

At first whe have to know what HDDs you have and you'll need a cable which will be for the desired type of HDD and your Motherboard needs to support it... if your pc is new i guess you have SATA disks (short small cable usually orange or red)
    Thanks IppE

Well. I didn't have much time to look around I was just told to grab some stuff before we left. If I can get back to the server and ask for the controller cards would it be ok then? Yeah, Currently I have a SATA setup.

Yes if they had a controller card for it.

There's a lot of different kinds of SCSI. You need to identify what sort of SCSI drive it is first. Considering this is from a server, a controller card is unlikely. A lot of the old server motherboards had dual SCSI controllers on-board. Even there is one, it'll probably be a 64-bit PCI-X card and will either run poorly or not at all in a normal slot. Here's some 50 and 68 pin cables that you'll probably need. Note that if your cable has more connections than devices, you must use a terminator (just like BNC networks, woohoo). If the price of that stuff hasn't scared you off, yet, here's a card that will work in a normal PC. There's also adapters that will convert various levels of SCSI between each other and to IDE or SATA, but I don't recommend them any more than I recommend running SCSI to begin with. Sort of defeats the purpose.

OK. So I guess selling will hurt my pocket less then.
