Glass armor

A Forum Thread for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

In RL?

Hey i was just wondering was glass armor ever used in real life? like did some welsh dude from the 1000s ever think to himself "hey i got an idea.. how about i make a suit of armor, made out of GLASS?"

Idk but it would be cool! Glass is the coolest looking armor in the game and the weapons are awsome too

  • Glass is heavy and weak compared to example steel and iron. A medieval knight in glass armor would probably be killed first of all. But it also depends on the thickness and how much glass there is.

All depends on how thick the glass is. Certain glasses can be missile proof.

And how heavy wouldn't that be? I don't think anyone would want an armor that's so heavy that no one can walk with it by them self. Also today we don't use large full body armor like back in the 13th century because I don't even think they had missile proof glass 200 years ago. Yes I know we use armor today but it's light weight and doesn't lower your mobility as much.

So does that mean the people back then had good technology?

Well I never said they had the technology we have today. But curved plates of glass could serve as very stable armour if you're able to carry all of it. Hollow glass is very breakable but a solid curved plate shaped into almost a D shape with a good supporting border would give long range arrows a very hard time of penetration (that's what she said) especially if highly glossed unless it was shot at the very peak of the curve, directly hitting it (with no angle/arch which is next to impossible) and had very, very high velocity. I would imagine glass armour would only have glass in certain places such as the cheast, stomach, shoulder, elbow, etc. areas and the rest would be metal.

Glass armor? Imagine you got hit by anything, or fell over. Smash... Imagine you got hit by a fast moving projectile. Smash + hundreds of fragments. More like a tomb than armor.

It would still have the same problems. The chain mail distributes / deflects blunt attacks, but you'd still end up smashing the glass armor, unless it weighed something like 3 times what the person wearing it did.

You could make armor out of paper, It'd just weigh a couple tons. (To be effective)

I think that google gives you a pretty answer. Googling "glass armor" returns 1 site that isn't related to The Elder Scrolls. It's pretty safe to say that it only exists in the world of TES.

In the game Morrowind, there was this set of armor made of chitin, and its about as itchy, you have to wear clothes over them.

Maybe the glass is magical? I doubt it's the same glass we know, after all it is green. I think what the Oblivion developers were getting at is that glass doesn't corrode or tarnish like metal and doesn't need to be constantly repaired with a repair hammer (though by the time you get glass weapons and armour repairing isn't really an issue).
