Okay, I've tried out steam games on Linux Ubuntu through Wine and I can just say they're playable for those who wants to know. Image and video hosting by TinyPic Image and video hosting by TinyPic Everything on low on the widescreen resolution near 1024x768. Well.. no eyecandy.. but it was playable. :) How did I get it to work nice with wine? Well, I installed Steam through wine by opening the terminal and write:
wine start SteamInstall.msi
Everything went on fine. OBS! You need font Tahoma to see the text and symbols in Steam. Then when steam got up I had to install a thing to see the shop and all in Steam so I installed it as I should. (Don't remember the name of it) Then you can use steam, Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat and all other Half-Life based games should work good on high resolution with OpenGL enabled. Now you want me to tell how to install Counter-Strike Source and other Source based games and make them work good on Linux too? Well.. If you don't have to have such good graphics in a game, then you should be fine by doing this: 1. Add the following line to the launch options of the game (right-click->Properties->Set Launch Options)
-applaunch 240 -gl -dxlevel 70 -console
2. Go in-game and play (I use everything in the advanced video options on low to amke sure I don't get to low fps, but default would work fine) Note: You can higher the graphics to 1024x768 or the widescreen side of that resolution without lag, but I can't say if it will lag if you higher it) That's all I can tell you, if you want it in the tutorials section just tell me. :P (took some time to write)

No need to lower the graphics. I play with default, although I think the textures look a little less detailed. Not sure why....

What sucks is WINE doesn't lower performance, but the video drivers do. They suck in comparison to the Windows ones, especially ATI's.

You do need a decent system to run Source on Linux... Tried it a bunch of times on Ubuntu myself and got rather bad framerates even with low-end settings. I have an NVidia card and the driver support for them is pretty decent actually, so I'd say Wine does cause some slow downs. However, as my comp is kinda outdated, it might not be an issue with dual- or quad-core processors, fast RAM and high end video cards.

Definitely not for the people with weaker systems, but works pretty well for the people with better systems. Although there are still some compatibility issues with some aspects, for example Steam's Friend messaging doesn't work. You can only send, not recieve messages.

There really is no profitable market for Linux optimized/based games, so I kinda doubt it. I've heard the rumors too, though.

Bout my hdd. Ubuntu simply can't handle the type I use. Alot of people have the same problem with that hdd, it's more a compatibility issue then anything else. Getting an external drive from a different type would work.
So remember. If you want to buy a new hdd for ubuntu, don't buy a seagate baracuda! >:|
