How to make a fading light in an impact?

Hi. I'm a beginner at this, and I'm trying to get a light effect on a bullet hole, that the impact of the shots lights up and the lighting turns off after a while, about two seconds.
I tried it with images (decals) and it didn't work, and now I'm trying to illuminate the impact spot and trying to fade the light shortly after, adding it as a child in the particle system, but nothing I've tried has worked. Could someone tell me how I should do it?
