How do I access the textures?

I'm trying to mod Portal but I can't find any textures. Anyone know how to find them?

Steam\steamapps\common\Portal\portal, you should find a file named portal_pak_dir this is the file that contains all textures of the game, you need to install GCFScape and use it to launch the file, all texture files are saved in .vtf or .vmt extension, thats the file type the game uses you need another program to be able to see them and make your own, install VTFEdit and launch the vtf file you want to edit, it top left click file and export, it will save the file as png, jpg, bmp whatever you want, then after you edit the image file you want to open VTFEdit again, click file, import and select the file that you edited, next you click file, save and it should save as a normal file. To apply the custom texture you need to create a folder named "custom" in portal directory (the same directory you took the textures file from) and then create folder with any name like "test". You also need to know the path for the texture and replicate it in the custom folder. For example if i want to change portal gun texture to my own, the path for the texture file would look like this custom\test\materials\models\weapons\v_models\v_portalgun.vtf, if that doesnt help, you can also watch tutorials online

To browse the .vpk archives, use Crowbar. Download it here. Do not download the source code, download the 7z file beginning with Crowbar.

You can use 3 different editors for the vtf/vmt files. VTFEdit, VMT Editor, or a plugin for GiMP that supports the .vtf format.

Get all 3 of them here:

GIMP .vtf plugin. You will have to search on how to install GIMP plugins. It is not hard though.

VMT Editor allows extensive editing of your materials so you can adjust how they look. Not easy to extract with but figured I might as well let you know it's here.

Which of the 3 you choose is your personal preference but I suggest VMT Editor and the vtf plugin for GIMP personally.

Now as for where to find the .vpk archive where the textures are stored, you will have to go by what Nidboj132 explained. I have Portal installed but on a different machine, not my main machine.
