Upscale texture resolution?

A Question for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (WiiU)

I'm making my first texture mod and the result so far looks too pixelated.
The dds I extracted from my bfres is of a rather low resolution, only 256x512.

Edit: I'm trying change Links skin, give him scars and whatnot. But the DDS for links whole body (front and back) is really small, the file for one ear alone has the same width. So I want to use a bigger image but have know idea how to get past bfres-tool witch just says "Data size mismatch".

Edit2: Thank you Alfa1337 and MasonJ for the response. As a newbie modder I feel that I should perhaps stick to well charted waters and leave the exploring to the more experienced. I ended up using a simpler pattern and solid colours to get a more clear edge, I deemed it good enough for a first mod.

Edit3: According to ZeldaMods.org it is not possible to increase texture resolution.

Universally, DDS contains (may) lower resolution textures, so that when you are looking that texture from far, it uses a lower resolution version, instead of the full version, unless you do not have MIPMAP generated for that file.

It could be that you've viewed the one of the downscaled version.

You could also scale the UVs of link's body so that the geometry faces of the body that require less detail use less of the image and faces that need more detail (like scars) have larger UVs that take up more of the image. That way you'd have more pixels for the more detailed parts. Or maybe hijack the ear texture as a second additional body texture.

Wait isn't bfres-tool outdated? I don't know if it will work for what you're trying to do but you could try using switch toolbox instead of bfres-tool. I think that's what most people use these days. Though, if you can up the res, you will probably need to update the rstb.

If you could upscale, the new texture would probably need to be the same aspect ratio as the original and probably needs to be a power of 2.
