Weird d3d error

I recently started back modding Battlefield 2. Installing the same weapon and the likes, i'm all geared up and set. But whenever i tried to set the game to run in Windowed mode, the game won't run. Instead, this error pops up :

Debug Assertion Failed!

Version : 1.5.3153-802.0 Build date:2014-4-4 11:23
Module : RendDX9
File : C:\dice\Projects\BF2Branches\Patch_1_50\Code\BF2\RendDX9\RendDX9Init.cpp
Line : 538

Text : Failed to create d3d device. Unknown cause. The function called is not supported at this time.

Current Confile : (Error window ends)

For my entire year of modding Battlefield, i have never seen this error, not even once. This is the exact same files and laptops i'm using 3 years ago and it worked flawlessly back then. Most of the fix rolls to Updating Driver and DirectX9, which i already did. Strangely is that, the game would actually works well with Fullscreen, 60FPS, its just make modding harder since Windowed mode gave the error if the game happen to crash.

Thanks in Advance.

    Did a quick Google search.

In the above solutions it suggested I would be hesitant on updating video card drivers.  The reason for that is I've encountered many posts about users having problems with newer drivers and Battlefield 2.  There are work arounds involving custom shaders and the like but I think avoiding as much alteration of core files as possible is best.

You say everything is the same on your laptop with absolutely no changes.  Does this include no changes to Windows?

If all else fails you can do a complete uninstall/reinstall of all necessary files.  It's what one user recommends here.

I don't know how to reply an answer here but thanks for the answers MChief.

Yes, its the same, Windows and all stuffs. The game even has some of the last mods i installed years ago. Maybe a few Network driver for WiFi(which, considering REVIVE got closed long ago, i think would make no connection to BF2 in and of itself, as i played offline all the time). I do checked the Steam page and all other web page for fix. Most of them leads to error showing "Unknown Cause. Invalid Call" rather than "Function called is not supported at this time."

I'll try to uninstall the whole game, including the profiles and the likes after this one. Thank you for the answer.
    Taking heavy fire!!
