Marc Laidlaw, former writer of the Half-Life games, has released the plot outline of Half-Life 2: episode 3, after 10 years of NDA. While the text itself has the names altered, they're mostly little more than gender bent name swaps (Gertie Fremont/Gordon Freeman), possibly to avoid Valve's ire.
The story talks about the purpose of the Borealis, a luxury cruise liner with an experimental device developed by Aperture Science Laboratories called the Bootstrap device, that allowed the ship to travel anywhere in a moment's notice without the need for other devices and without any travel time. During installation of the untested device, the Seven Hour War broke out, forcing the crew to fire the device to send the Borealis to the Antarctic. Something went wrong as it also allowed for travel through time and not just any one time/place.
The Borealis was to act as some sort of bridge between the Seven Hour War and current day Antartica. Doctor Breen is brought back as a Combine Grub and Alyx is recruited by the G-Man after killing Judith and sending the Borealis into the Combine Dyson sphere, while Gordon is retrieved by the Vortigaunts.
While it is very likely the game will never see the light of day, beyond perhaps another studio picking up the story and finishing what Valve forsake, at least this provides some closure as to Gordon's fate.
Well there is some stuff in how Breen came back, I had my suspicions of a plot twist like that when you consider the lesser-investigated line "A host body? You have to be kidding... ....alright dammit if that's what it takes...." Combine Grub, basically an Advisor. Assuming the change was made before his human body died.
Valve has to pull their head out of their ass and stop making hats and mersamus updates to TF2 and gay skins to CS:GO and go back to being video game devs instead of stand-around-and-get-paid-for-DLC-that-does-fuckall devs.
Mark laidlaw might as well find a nother developer than Valve, granted its not trademarked by now. Even then, replace Gordon Freeman with Gregory Fondue and Alyx Vance with Amelia Vice and call the combine the evil science and outer space faction and just whip something up.
Again to all those who despair at the fact that Valve as a game company is dead and thus think HL2 EP3 / HL3 is dead fear not.
Marc Laidlaw gave us a script to work with and now its up to us the fans and the mod community to make HL3 and finish up the story arc.
Valve may be dead but though us the fans and the mod community we CAN finish Half Life with 2 mods as I see it
HL2 EP3 mod would be based on this script using a modified and improved version of the source engine
and HL3 would be the final arc finishing off at the combine home world with Gordon catching up to G-man, Alex, and Adrian Shepard with the help of the vortigaunts and or the remaining resistance science team.
Would be interesting if at the end Gordon finds a way to snub G-Man in the process of destroying the combine as well.
