Ban Reason

An Idea

Introduction:

I noticed many bans lately, not for new members but for old ones, Rip supporters, high positively active members & skilled modders with hundreds of submissions.
OFC that don't make them untouchable, but the story behind the ban still blurry for most of them.

So ban reason will be just like Trash/flag, Maybe the Admins feel uncomfortable about that, but for Banned people, their buddies/subscribers deserve to know the truth.
Yes, there is a couple lines on their profiles (some of them), but that's not enough & here comes my idea.

The main idea:

If the ban was by request or duplicate account the reason is pure & simple could be explained with two words.

but when it comes to Abuse, disrespectful to GB staff, breaking the rules, submitting illigal contain or privately sharing unauthorized stuff, this needs some explanation attached with screenshot from conversation/PM/blog/sub that led to the ban.

You can censorship parts that include names, locations & URLs. And OFC keep the other side of the conversation + the admin who did the ban unrevealed.
You can make the reason required but not linked to the ban button, in case many members violations happened so that will not be an obstacle (i guess Tom & Admins know what i mean).
You don't have to do that for previous bans (maybe only for the recent familiar ones), but for the next bans (I hope they will be no more).

Conclusion:

I hope this isn't provocative for Admins & Moderators.
This is just an idea, & ideas are bulletproof.

I don't exactly see how this would be beneficial for anyone. We really only make the ban reason directly shown on a user's profile page if people are speculating about the ban in a ridiculous manner or the banned user and/or their buddies start spreading misinformation about the ban. There's not too much of a reason to make the ban publicly known unless one (or both) of those factors are met.

Not to mention, but more often than not, people will ask the person that was banned directly for the ban reason instead of reading the profile page of the user or asking site staff, and more often than not they'll be given an answer by the banned user saying something along the lines of "it was for no reason" or "because this community sucks" or whatever they think helps make them across as innocent while also making us seem like the bad guys in the situation, all the while also completely neglecting to mention what it was they actually did that landed the ban in the first place or giving a false reason behind the ban entirely. As a result, that person's buddies and anyone else who asked the banned user just start jumping on the bandwagon by causing trouble around the site or making a big commotion over something that doesn't directly affect them, and that only creates more problems for us to clean up.

If people want to know about the ban, they should ask site staff directly instead. If you're given a summarized version of the reason (i.e., someone was banned for constantly uploading stolen content and then throwing a tantrum on the site whenever it was removed, that can be summarized as an immature user constantly uploading stolen content), that should suffice. Whenever someone gets banned from GB (or any site, really), they're going to have their own bias about their own actions and think they were absolute saints or completely justified in their behavior. We keep track of this kind of stuff to ensure that we review each user's behavior on the site over the time they've been here, and we normally discuss things before actually placing a ban.

TL;DR version; people aren't very observant even when we openly state what the ban reason is on the profile page, and will just ask the banned user why they were banned anyways, and then we have to clean up the mess further because the banned user either didn't tell the truth at all or tried to pass off the ban as site staff being assholes when that wasn't the case.

I'm quite undecided about the idea.

While it is a good idea to add some explanation of why the ban was put in the first place, it's not a very good idea to attach a screenshot with it. It would be similar to the act of publicly humiliating someone, which is something we shouldn't be doing. This will in the end serve no good to anyone, and will instead lead to more arguments and bans, which is something completely undesired.

Just as Tom said, a simple but clear explanation would be enough, as it can be informative for other users to learn what went wrong or to get that behaviors adjusted accordingly.

I think being transparent about the reason is important, partly because it can be informational for others users who may need to adjust their behavior, but publishing visual evidence is probably going too far. We don't want to shame the user, we just don't want them in our community anymore.

I feel as if a ban reason is generally something that should be kept private. Some people may not be comfortable with that being publicly accessible. In some cases I think it's necessary to share, like if someone is a continuous problem to the community or what have you, but for other situations, it's a private situation that I feel should boil down to the individual being banned. I know I wouldn't want my ban reason plastered up on my profile for everyone to see.
