Lately I've been noticing a lot of submissions with positive feedback and high download counts but little to no likes. The ratio of likes to downloads is insanely low.
I believe this is due to 2 major causes.
1. Users without accounts 2. The Like button is not near the User's field of focus when downloading a submission.
I'm posting this idea to propose a fix to issue number two.
If we were to relocate the Like button closer to the Download button, I feel a user who has made up his/her mind to download the content will be more likely to also drop a like since it'll be in their field of focus on the page while they go to click the Download button.
If it were up to me I would put it between the Description module and the Files module like so.
I believe most people will read the mod title, check out the screenshots and if they like it will go straight to download. Most people will also scroll down to leave a comment and that will hide the buttons from view.
The right-hand column was needed for the old ratings system
since it provided multiple points to rate a submission over and that needed some space. But since
we have moved on from ratings, a reconsideration could be made
for the UX as well.
So consider placing the entire submission stats module - all of the counts, likes button and subscribe button at a place where it is readily visible. A few suggestions come to my mind :-
We could place it above the download section, after the description where user will usually scroll down to - to either download or comment. This will group all submission-related actions together and there will be less back-and-forthing as well.
We could place it to the right of the submission title - like Github has the Star/Fork/Watch buttons. But it works well for Github because its' Clone/Download buttons are also right up there at the top.
